One week they collect land fill the next they collect recyclable and garden rubbsh. It's the pits. If you put your bin out the night before they fine you, if you forget you've got the waste for another 2 weeks. If it isn't in the bin it won't get collected (health and safety!) as it's deemed to be 'dangerous' to pick a black sack up from the floor. If they spot a piece of the wrong re-cyclable stuff in the wrong sack it gets left (the sacks are all clear plastic specifically for this reason). We have seen an increase by 60% in the amount of vermin, there is rubbish all over the place as people tend to dump it along the side of the road rather than take it all the way to the tip if it isn't collected. If you have a family and forget to put the bin out you're stuffed. When the garden is growng quckly in the spring, you have to get the waste to the council site ~ how can hundreds of people all taking stuff to the tip help the environment?
What a load of whingers you are!
We have 3 bin recycling already with weekly for kitchen waste, and fortnightly for non recyclable and recyclable.
It works fine. No flies. No maggots. Smells no worse than before.
At least the council is doing something positive.
We couldn't carry on the way we were!

Whinger's Panic Button? I dont know where you live but in most area's no matter how prudent a house holder is it does'nt stop the dogs, cats.mice and even rats from tearing open the bags leaving the contents to spill out over the pavement's. What the council should do is, bring back the good old metal dustbins with secure lids, not 2nd rate bin bags.

We have had wheelies for about a year now .It works quite well on a two week basis ..one week recycling one week general rubbish. The only downside is that they are picky about what you can and cannot put in the green wheelie to be recycled .Shredded paper is not allowed nor are envelopes . When I queried this with the council they said that they do not have the plant in place to deal with shredded paper and the glue from envelopes. So my way of looking at it is that this defeats the object .What is shredded paper ....it's bluddy paper ! And there must be loads of it that is going to landfill.
Fly tipping in my area is rife though and garden rubbish is a big problem for me although I have a composter.
Our council don't provide a brown bin for the garden rubbish but the council in the next town do and this is a huge bone of contention. The whole thing should be more organised and it should be a level playing field for everyone ..we should all, regardless of local councils have the same facilities. For example when they introduced the wheelies they didn't want kerbside boxes back....they could all have been recycled.
As for smellie bins I don't have a problem ..I just hose them out every so often and put some Jeyes powder in them.

In Manchester we have 3 different bins sizes for general non recycling waste.
Also
A Bin with a pink lid for garden waste.
And a green box for recycling plastic
And a bag for papers.
The collection sevice around my area is excellent.
If your bin is full and you have more rubbish we just leave the extra bags at the side.
The men take them all the time.
I wish you all had the same service as me i just hope mine doesn't end up like yours.
Many thanks to you all.

After reading todays papers
250,00 families with a spy in the bins.
The first official trials of a pay as you throw rubbish away has started
Nearly 250,000 familys have had microchips fitted to there bins.
Local councils have called for a pay-as-you-throw tax which means bills of 10 a week or more.
They do say they would cut council tax if the rubbish tax is brought in(Yeh right )

It appears, Panic Button, that you are rather fortunate in that you have weekly collections of kitchen waste. The point of the bi-weekly collections (where I live at least) is that the kitchen waste, scraps etc are collected every 2 weeks. We are required to put all our non-recyclable waste in the green wheelie bin for collection every 2 weeks and with the limitations on recyclable elements being placed (some mentioned above) it is struggle to get 2 weeks worth of non-recyclable household waste into a wheelie bin.
I am not whingeing about the principle, nor really the practicalities I have the means to trot off to the local tip occasionally to sling my junk into a pit. But what I do feel strongly about is that it isnt really about saving landfill space and creating a greener environment (do you know how much un-renewable energy these recycling plants use?) It really is all a con. I am getting really fed up with the way we are all being bombarded with these green issues. It is an issue yes, but more importantly it is a topical, political mechanism for attempting to justify increases in tax levies on household costs, transport and holidays abroad and winning electoral points.
