university applications

Is anyone else sick of this drive to get the working classes into higher education at the expense of the middle classes? I have no problem with anyone carrying on with education who wants to learn, but what's with the desperation to get people into university when they would probably be better off going straight into employment?

It is your assumptions my little tiger cub, not mine, that have put up barriers. For the second time class IS NOT about money or the size of your house or car. I thought I made that crystal clear. I have middle, even upper, class friends that drive clapped out old bangers.
Being middle class, and not those from peasant backgrounds, is about having conservative values. Having a modicum of cultural awareness and a degree of stable mindedness that makes valued opinion and thought a reality to the whole of society.
There is nothing wrong in being working class and at no time have I said so. Good grief, I have been on public transport you know!!! And during the eighties I even attended a well known burger bar. So don't harp on to me what it is like!!!!
Off the thread maybe, but that is debate my little tinkerbell.
The only things that annoys me about the masss though (yes you dear student gal), is their belief that we do not live in a meritocracy. By God we do. When filling out a job application does it say "Are you from a council house or country mansion?" And have you ever seen an advert that says Degree from Oxbridge only? No No and thrice NO.
We live in a fair and just society.
A further bug-bear from the masses I have is their overall opinion of me. Yes I admit I was born in to a fairly affluent family and one may say I am now doing alright for myself. However, I have worked and saved my socks off to be in the position I am now. I have never received handouts from either my family or the government.
Further proof, the life chances are out there for all whether black, white, yellow, fat, thin, man, woman, born to middle class parents or peasants. Education is free to all and access to opportunity is there for the

mammar thank you for your answer. I am not being sarcastic in my reply, honest.
The area I work is full of youths who do not see the point of working towards exam passes because there's nothing they can directly achieve from them. It's not that they expect 25k+ jobs just for passing A levels, but that there are no jobs that need any education at all, so to their minds what is the point? They not surrounded by achievement or work or any inspiration, so what's the point?
It's so awful to see what could be entheusiatic people seeing no hope for the future unless they move far away to get work. There are absolutely no employment opportunities in the area.

Two points:
1) For those of you who don't know - Joe The Lion used to be called WardMinter and has been banned from the site previously. Sadly he seems to have nothing better to do with his time than to come on and wind people up with his racist and bigoted comments.
2) Just thought I would share the lyrics from an Avenue Q song:
"What do you do with a B.A. in English,
What is my life going to be?
Four years of college and plenty of knowledge,
Have earned me this useless degree.
I can't pay the bills yet,
'Cause I have no skills yet,
The world is a big scary place
But somehow I can't shake,
The feeling I might make,
A difference,
To the human race.
Morning, Brian.
Hi, Kate Monster.
How's life?
Disappointing.
What's the matter?
The catering company laid me off."
Well it made me laugh.
