If you ask me (which you didn't), so long as there are economically depressed countries in the world and there is demand in the UK for cheap, cheap, cheap labour then this country is openly inviting migrant workers; illegal or not. I do not agree with illegal immigrants hopping over the channel in order to sign on the dole, but I do feel for the ones who come over here in a desperate bid to get work and subsquently end up exploited by our system and answering to 'gangmasters' just because our country runs a system whereby suppliers will exploit cheap labour in order to meet consumer demands.

There's more to illegal immigrants that just the few leeches who hit the media headlines you know.

criminals who show ingenuity, may be begrudgingly admired for their cunning and cleverness - i mean, we all like to hear a story of an amazingly well thought out crime, such as the great escape, shawshank redemption, oceans 11 etc - but that is all - in reality, you cannot then allow them to do what they like and get away with it.

I didn't say they were enterprising. I said they were prepared to work. The country needs people willing to work; that's how countries become prosperous. It also needs people willing to raise children, because they're the ones who will pay our pensions. I congratulate all those people who have never broken the law - never broken the speed limit, for instance? Always hand the money back when they're given too much in their change? The country needs you too.

I hold to enterprising that doesn't exclude it from being illegal.
Crime is a social construct that is located in context, time and culture and changes. They broke the law and committed a criminal offence, but from my cultural perspective, less serious than speeding on the roads in a car.

jno in an answer to your questiob who makes all the pottery now im afraid its mostly being made in taiwan and indonesia its cheaper for companies to employ cheap labour over there and then ship the wares back to the uk.major names in the pottery industry ie royal doultons.spode and to a certain degree wedgewoods all do this.this practice has decimated the pottery industry.

bigmalc, your point about finding something other than immigration to talk about. I have only used AB for just over a week and it does appear that immigration is one of the main topics to get hits for - other than the in crowd/obscure threads in B and S. Have you any suggestions of anything topical to chat about that does not start or end with immigration? I am sure this would be welcomed by some.

Stokeace. Yes I had gone quiet yesterday and it did look suspiciously like I was piqued because there was some authenticity to you newspaper story (even if the story was a so what) but in reality I went to be to get some sleep as I unlike others that use this site can not do this 24/7 although its beginning to feel like it. I gave up a 30+ a day smoking habit 3 months ago and appear to have swapped nicotine for AB - how sad is that

As for illegal immigrants blame the goverment, its been happening for many a year now, if they {goverment} insist on free hand outs to all why are we surprised by the state of this country now, its not just a immigrant thing as well, i know enough people who were born here be it white, black, asian etc who cannot/won't be bothered to get of there ar$e and work for a living, they are equally to blame for the strain on the NHS, housing, benefits etc.
i don't have an issue with where someone has come from, but have a ''MAJOR ISSUE'' with the people who scrounge of the state, there are too many people who want to do sweet FA and live on easy street, get a life, get a job & pay your way like everyone else.

The point I'm making that you don't seem to be able to grasp is the fact is that as a british taxpayer why should I be down the queue to get housed behind someone non british who has made ZERO contribution to our welfare systemand is unlikely to.

It's spelt 'slowly'.

A family friend has a daughter who is 19 and has two children with another on the way. Her partner left her. She's doesn't have a job and never has. She's on benefits. She's never paid any tax in her life.

I don't have any kids. I've never been out of work and paid my taxes quite happily. Unlike her, I'm not a drain on the economy.

Who deserves a council house more? Her or me? I'm genuinely interested in your answer.

NJOK - I know it's spelt slowly is was just trying to drag it out sorry. On your question, bit of a catch 22 obviously a mother with children has to be housed because of her kids but why have kids when you can't support them (don't get me started on child benefit lol) and by the same token a drain on the state and unlikely to contribute. I fall into the same category as you: work, pay tax, no kids, claim nothing etc etc and do on occasion feel hard done by i.e., no tax allowances, child benefit, paternity pay, tax credits etc but it's life.

Having said that I put British scroungers above non british scrougers.
