Sir Trevor McDonald

I don't like Bernard Mannings comedy, it is dated and maybe wasn't suitable in this day and age but I am curious as to peoples opinions. Should Sir Trevor be allowed to get away with calling him a "fat white b**t*rd"?
Is this not a form of racism also? If the shoe was on the other foot, there would be public outcry. I do not support any kind of racism, but i am also not a fan of double standards. Are there any coloured ABers out there who laughed at Sir Trev's comments the way some white would laugh at Bernards? Does this not reflect how all of these comments should be taken? with a pinch of salt and not with the uproar which normally happens?
People may say it was said as a joke (which is still unacceptable to many) but i have saw the clip a few times now and it wasn't a joke. There was severe anger and hatred in Sir Trevors eyes as he made the comment.
I wasn't gonna bring this up in the AB as I reckoned it would just get me ridiculed but then I thought "why not" as the page would be full of comments had it been the other way round.
We cant have a half hearted approach to all of the race issues in the uk. Either its the same rule for all regarding comments or as i'd prefer we all just chill out and learn to laugh again at all walks of life, because not one of us is perfect.

I think if you are going to be offended by programmes like this, Day2Day , Brass Eye etc, then give them a wide berth.
In the context of the programme I actually thought it was funny, but alot of that had to do with Trevor coming out with it. If it was Angus Deayton on have I got news for you, no-one would prob have batted an eyelid, its just that TM has been respected as a newsreader for so many years it was a jaw dropper when he came out with it.

To be honest - I thought or would have done if it had ever occured to me to think about B Manning, past 1970 something, that he was already dead - Why should anyone be worried about having a pop at him - like what could he do other than trot out his tired out racist sexist cliches, oh I suppose he could have sat on someone and squashed them.
jimmy, there are 13 sentences in your 'question'; four of them have a question mark at the end. If you want a short, sharp answer you'll have to ask a short, sharp question. If you insist on posing multiple questions and expanding on your personal philosophy in the question field, you can expect comment on that as well.
Some you are just coming up with bullsh1t excuses though, aren't you. Excusing it because it is TM's opinion of one person and is not his opinion of all white people is a flawed argument, because as sure as eggs are eggs if a presenter were to say, in the manner that TM did, that Lenny Henry is an unfunny black b4stard there would be plenty of people bleating on about racism.
Saying it in the context of the programme is also flawed pretty much for the same reasons.
By the way, the Brass Eye child abuse episode was a work of genius, although the Cake episode was better.

jno, you are clutching at straws now with your argument. Is that the best you can come up with after all this time? I never asked for short sharp answers did I? I asked for answers regarding the set question. Thankfully the others on this thread have grabbed at this concept and I'd like to thank them for their comments.
As for you it seems you are more persistant in abusing other AB users and questioning them individually for their beliefs or stances in a public discussion. Notice how everyone else has simply answered the question with their opinion (which some agree with and some don't) but you seem to have a one track mind that makes you right and to hell with anyone else who has an opinion that different to yours.
I have found your argument petty and it is due to opinions like that, that this country has the divide in which it does. If we can't even talk about it without it turning into a slanging match how will it ever be resolved in the real world

If that is a true comment - I guess there is not a lot of point in trying to have a dialouge with you. It will also help people who on this site are anxious to declare they are not racist as this will be a clear indicator to them that they will not want to be associated with your racial pride and mistaken ideas of superiority.

This is astonishing. It really doesn't take a sophisticated appreciation of comedy to spot that these two cases are totally different. Or maybe it does?
BM was an openly racist old school comedian who told jokes at the expense of ALL black people.
Let me walk you through Trevor's case.
He swore - turning the expected behaviour of a newscaster on its head. It's called subversion.
He used a racial slur to attack someone who used racist slurs. This is irony.
By using this irony, he pretended to have mistakenly been hypocritical. This is called self-deprecation.
By using an inappropriate, hurtful jibe at the expense of someone who has made a living from it for about 40 years - and upsetting the very people who are upset on this thread - he is dishing out a taste of racists' own medicine.
Whoosh.
That was the noise of it going way, way over people's heads. Now I understand why the schedules are clogged up with first-base comedy like My Hero. Cheers for clearing that one up.

OEV / Waldo , these days ironic or not , context or not, if a white celebrity broadcaster had ironically/contextually called , for example, Lenny Henry, the Archbishop of York or the Ayatollah a fat black bast**d there would have been mayhem.
These are the days of PC and wonder (and Big Brother) - there are no exceptions, even for irony or context - or am I being ironic . Alf Garnet / love thy Neighbour and even Bernard Manning are all dead.

Yeah, but that's not true is it?
On Little Britain, Matt Lucas starred in a sketch where he was a driving instructor who used to be a policeman. At the end, he tells the learner:
'Now get out of here. You black b*stard.'
No one complained about that, because it was an ironic comment on police racism and, doubly, because of the context - he was saying it to a man who was white.
So, yes, there are exceptions for irony and context.

olddutch - it's not the same - the Archbishop of York isn't a fat white ***** BM was and all the posts that point out TM wasn't racist as he was making fun of ONE person, not a race are correct surely?? A better analogy would surely be someone having a go at Chris Rock?
The PC brigade have totally got their knickers in a twist over this - racism is someone discriminating against someone else on the basis of race. DISCRIMINATING! Not purely calling someone what they are.
And before you all have a go, I believe it should work both ways, and currently doesn't seem to.

And I'd argue that it would also apply if the driver had been black.
Oh, and a quick point of order - Lenny Henry hasn't made his name by espousing racist views and telling racist jokes. Nor, I think, has the Archbishop of York.
The joke against Manning works because he's racist, not just because he's white.
