Bear boxing in China....
The things some people go to for entertainment & the owners to earn money. They can't be right in the head!
What do you think of this story, regarding bears being forced to box each other, complete with boxing gloves & muzzles?

This cruelty to animals must stop!

But show us Brits a few pictures of some cruelty to animals and we take to the streets!
Why is that I wonder?, it does seem a peculiarly British trait

Well that's alright then.

We should all boycott Chinese goods until these savages start behaving properly.

Hey smudge :-)
Yes i agree, awful thing to do for "entertainment", in fact I'm too much of a wuss to even open the link, I can imagine what goes on.
Asian countries do not view animals as we Westerners (generally) do. I'm not saying this to be racist, it's a fact. To them any animal is there purely for a purpose, be it entertainment or food with not a thought of their well-being in the meantime.
As for the people who've compared it to human boxing, that's just ridiculous.

With respect Gromit - I think we're all aware of the injuries Boxing can cause to Human Beings - but maybe you'd like to start up another thread for that over in Sports or Body & Soul - as I mentioned before, this one is regarding cruelty to animals.
Mind you, you may find people will agree, that humans can think & talk for themselves & if boxing is their chosen profession, then it's between them & the Boxing Board....

I hate cruelty to animals and boxing, personally find both distressing and not at all amusing. But, sadly not everyone thinks the same way.
It is beyond my comprehension that in this country where we are so called civilized and claim to abhor violence, we still have legitimate violence in boxing. The only message boxing gives is that the way to win is to hit harder.
The British may claim to be animal lovers but its not like the RSPCA or any other animal welfare organization has gone out of business or likely to do so in the near future.

Hi BOO - crossed posts.
I know what you mean about not wanting to look at the link, but I promise you, there's no gory details on it. It shows two innocent bears dressed up in boxing gloves, capes & string muzzles ready for Round 1. Oh, along with the morons ready for the show!
God knows what the bears look like after the fight though....

Maybe you should have posted in Animals and Nature?

Bl00dy chInkies, coming over here flogging their 42 inch Plasma televisions. It's an outrage!

Gromit - The reason I didn't post it in Animals & Nature, is because it was a story in the Newspaper this morning - you know current news!
There are lots of articles in the News category which could be moved to other categories, but which still remain.
No doubt someone will pop along & report it soon though.
Anyway, back to the 'original' question....

Personally I actually quite like boxing... or at least I like heavy weight boxing. Bear boxing is pretty heavy weight but not really quite what I had in mind.
As much as I feel very sorry for the bears involved I do find it difficult to get very worked up about this type of story. I can see how cruel it is but yet I really am quite apathetic about it all. Flaw in my own character I think. Sorry Smudge.

I am no animal lover (I can't stand animals being any where near me - including cats, dogs, hamsters etc etc).
However, I don't see the point of using animals for entertainment or not thinking about suffering that can be caused to them by our thoughtlessness.
Incidentally, that story about cruelty to turtles in China has to be tempered by our understanding that we can be pretty nasty to some animals here...I mean, can we all say that we've only ever eaten humanely killed lobsters?
