Did anyone hear the fabulous transcription of the home birth on the Victoria Derbyshire show this morning on Radio Five Live. I am not ashamed to say that there were tears in my eyes as I listened to the 20-year-old ambulance call centre girl give the husband instructions. OK, it was printed on her screen in front of her, but it was the calm way she led him through the procedure. She really deserves an award

I was a bit bemused that it actually made the news - a nice story granted - but news?
It is now 2007 and the world population is humongous. How did that happen? We didn't always have (and a lot of people still do not) have the luxury of hospitals, doctors, midwifes, and computer screen instructions, to assist in the birth-process. But guess what, babies still getting born.
Why does she deserve an award? Surely she was just doing the job she gets paid to do, as an ambulance 999 operator.

Should the ambulance crews also get an award every time they carry out emergency treatment?.

If any awards should be given out, they should be given to the husband who delivered the baby.
