Smoking whilst driving is now banned!

My neighbour is up in arms about this saying that 'they should let me smoke as I get irritable if I can't have a fag'!
I have been in the car with her when she smokes and quite honestly she cannot control the car properly when she lights up. Why are (some) smokers so inconsiderate?

Maybe it's just me, but I've NEVER seen anyone take 2 hands to light a fag. Isn't it unlit fag in mouth + flame/heat source held in one hand = lit fag?

Laurence the thing that bugs me most is the fact that smoking is LEGAL.

I smoke consideratly but if its so bad why isnt it banned??

I appreciate that smoking is LEGAL.

The Goverment ban imposed in public places this year tho was to ''PROTECT'' non smokers ie passive smoking etc.

In regards to smoking whilst driving, they are basically saying ''control of a vehicle'' in other words, its some sort of excuse to fine you.

Ps, i'm a non-smoker in case anyone ask

Laurence smoking whilst driving can be dangerous along with numerous other things. I understand about passive smoking (not sure about the evidence though) but there is no alternative given i.e. smoking rooms or smoking pubs.

As a smoker I think if it is that bad ban the sale of fags but the govt wont because of the duty.

I heard on the radio that smoking while driving a car is illegal as from today. This and about 24 other clauses have been added to the highway code. If they can prosecute a woman for taking a swig of water out of a bottle while waiting at traffic lights, they can do as they d*mn well please. I'm a nonsmoker, and non-driver, so it doesn't personally affect me, but I am getting increasingly annoyed about the Nanny State, and erosion of our liberties. You have to take a hand off the steering wheel to change gear, or use the indicators, so I don't see a difference quite frankly. Either way one hand comes off the wheel for a few seconds, so why should smoking a cigarette be more dangerous than indicating or changing gear?

They obviously allow you to take one hand of the wheel to carry out other car duties, but as soon as you've change gear for example, its back to the 10 to 2 position.

Imagine people being pulled up for that one {10 to 2}
