Has the world gone PC mad?
Correct me if I am wrong, but I am sure that I heard on the the news this morning that supermarket staff are to be given the right to decide not to sell something if they oppose it on religous grounds, the example given was that Muslims might not want to sell alcohol.
I presume that means that either Tesco etc will have to have alcohol free counters that you can use if you are not buying booze or that you will get your shopping as normal and then be faced with a refusal to process when you get to the alcohol on the conveyor belt.
Given the discrimination laws, supermarkets would not be able to discrimintae against these individuals when they are applying for the job, but will untimately have staff that are not doing the job that they are recruited to do.
Is it just me, or do you think that surely if you felt that strongly, you just wouldn't apply for a job that entailed you doing stuff against your beliefs rather than expecting the employer to change the job to suit you?

The can also refuse to sell Sherry Trifle and Wine Gums.
In fact as well as "10 items only" aisles and "hand baskets only" aisles they are going to have "no alcohol, xmas decorations and wine gums" aisles.

Thanks VHG - I had misse dthat one and it didn't come up as a related question when I posted - some very interesting debate there.
I paticularly liked the comment about vegetarians being afforded the right not to hanle meat and fish.
I suppose I don't have any religous principles, so it is difficult for me to judge, i just think that if I felt that strongly, I would either work elsewhere, or if it was the only job available, I would do the job fully and ask to be forgiven by my god as I needed to feed myself or my family.

Its all total nosense.
If you cannot fulfil your job description, you should'nt get the job or even apply for it in the first place.
The supermarkets will easily get around this without discrimination, they will for example offer all who apply an interview, and then turn down who they decide is not suitable for the job.
No discrimination there then.
We had a fitter {muslim} that joined our company then told the company afterwards that he would'nt be able to carry out his job at certain parts of the day {everyday} due to daily prayers, so they told him if this was the case, they would have to terminate his contract due to him not being able to fulfil his dutys.
The funny thing was, that all of a sudden he could manage to accomadate his prayers outside the working hours.
Interesting

'PC' for wont of a better phrase is absolutely the best thing that's ever happened to this country....indeed to any country.
Without 'PC' we'd still be living in a world where you as a woman could expect to get you backside grabbed whilst walking through your HR department....
...where your Muslim co-worker could expect to be referred to as a 'towel head' and where that 19 year old black girl in Customer Servicencould expect to be called a 'hoochy mama' behind her back.
PC is brilliant. It makes the poorly educated stop before the speak.
God bless PC.
Don't know why they didn't think of it in the 70s!!!
From where I stand, the only people who seem to have a problem with it are those who have Jim Davidson DVDs in their video collections.
You can tell who they are...they're the blokes whose wives regularly sport black eyes.

I can see what you are saying about weeding people out at the interview stage or dismissing on the basis of non-fulfilment of duties, but I think that it won't be long before someone brings a case to court. They will probably be better quailified than the individual who was appointed and use religous or race discrimination law.
I am all for people being treated equally, but I think that positive discrimination or rules like these are flawed and do nothing but cause discontention

Laurence, that doesn't surprise me in the least. People go along to interviews, especially in places like supermarkets, knowing full well what the shop sells and what the job entails, and once the job is secured start bleating on about their religion. How dishonest is that? Although I don't like to sound suspicious, I can't help wondering what the motives are. These people are making fools of their employers - and of every politically correct nincompoop who supports their nonsense.
Isn't it amazing that Jews do not harp on about it. In fact both M&S and Tesco's are both from Jewish backgrounds, yet you don't hear them moan about selling pork products.
Likewise you can bet your last dollar that Hindus are not mitherring about beef.
No it is fair to say it is our lovely muslim cousins.
Bless their little evil-filled hearts.

sp1814 - I don't think that anyone is advocating returning to the days where people were bullied and harrased for being anything other than a hetrosexual male anglo saxon.
I think it is about choosing what is right for you and not expecting the majority to conform. It is like saying that people who believe that breastfeeding is best should be able to work in a chemist and refuse to sell formula milk.
I think it is about horses for courses.

This is just my opinion, but I suspect in 50 - 100 years, there will be a generation of people who will look back on us and consider us as no more than Neanderthals with Blackberries.
PC will not be an issue because the our generation and our pathetic, infantile hang-ups will be gone.
We already have it now...my nephew who's 17 cannot understand how women had to fling themselves in front of the King's horse in order to achieve universal suffrage.
Every generation pushes the boundaries of acceptance forward.
Thank God for the yongsters. They're the true PC generation...and I think they rock!!!
I reckon in 50 years, our kids/grandkids will look at us the same way.
I honestly think that PC is the way forward. To me, everything else seems a bit...Luddite!

For the most part I absolutely (and unsuprisingly) agree with Splat. I have to exclude Garfield from the Jim Davidson thing. And I suspect that might have been a tongue in cheek comment.
PC does make people think about what it is they're actually saying and can break down barriers. If you give it a chance it can even give a hand in understanding other cultures.
It can like anything be taken to extremes.
In fact, I think it speaks volumes that we actually ever needed a tool like PC.
But I fail to see how anything that promotes positivity towards each other is seen as any kind of threat to other peoples rights.

sp, people of all colours, creeds, religions, physical qualities - whatever you care to mention - have come in for ridicule throughout time immemorial. Fat, thin, ginger, big nose, goofy teeth, too blonde, too dark, spotty, protruding ears, short, tall - and I'm a white honky - so anything you care to mention is picked up on by someone, somewhere. As unkind as it may be, that's human nature, and we all have to deal with it at sometime in our lives. The simple fact is whilst we can legislate against people speaking their minds, we can't prevent people thinking their own thoughts, so legislation does not cure the problem, unless perhaps you consider thought control would be a good thing too? If so, I seriously doubt you realise precisely what you are expounding - but with the PC brigade in this country going to way they are, happily for you, that solution may not be far off.
