Has the world gone PC mad?
Correct me if I am wrong, but I am sure that I heard on the the news this morning that supermarket staff are to be given the right to decide not to sell something if they oppose it on religous grounds, the example given was that Muslims might not want to sell alcohol.
I presume that means that either Tesco etc will have to have alcohol free counters that you can use if you are not buying booze or that you will get your shopping as normal and then be faced with a refusal to process when you get to the alcohol on the conveyor belt.
Given the discrimination laws, supermarkets would not be able to discrimintae against these individuals when they are applying for the job, but will untimately have staff that are not doing the job that they are recruited to do.
Is it just me, or do you think that surely if you felt that strongly, you just wouldn't apply for a job that entailed you doing stuff against your beliefs rather than expecting the employer to change the job to suit you?

Ok. That's fine - we won't fall out over it, since disagreement is the nature of debate and I'm always happy with that.
Why are you groaning? In answer to your question 'they' clearly are people who, after securing a job and obviously agreeing to the terms of employment, complain about handling things they are originally employed to handle - and, in this instance, it seems to me that once they complain, 'they' get their way - don't 'they'? Another question. Do you deem it honest to accept a job knowing full well that you are unable, for whatever reason, to carry it out?
Got to go to bed now - but as Arnie says - I'll be back!! Night China.

With regards to the job then yes I agree.
I'm groaning because this mystical 'they' causes me problems. 'They' is very divisive and forms a them and us culture. Which is when I think PC can be helpful because it's not them and us. We're all goverend by the same rules etc.. It's just not helpful.
Yes there are people who abuse it. But this 'they' always infers that it's some alien from abroad that does it and we know that this is not the case. It's not like there's no history of your stereotypical, white brit doing the same thing.
I just find 'they' a negative concept.
I have issues over the idea that the minority always getting what they want to but it's late and I'm tired.
G'night!

well i totally agree with the original post, as in why would you take a job that does not suit your needs unless your intention was to complain about it or slack off IE: selling products you don't agree with....or i have to pray.
Also the point has been raised that surely any god would forgive anyone that needs to feed their family and may have to break a few religious beliefs in doing so, im sure he's fine with that so long as no one gets hurt.
PC these days seems more about religion than anything else.
Be honest how many people on here have at some point thought "stop ******* whinging or **** off!" will ya.....at some point at these so called.............. is there a word as they're not even equlangelists... religious nuts.
annie0000, my apologies for ruining your question, hopefully im sure it will be ****** no offence intended

PC gone mad? Maybe we should use the same laws to say "You are discriminating against us."
People, whoever they are, have to buy their food somewhere, generally a supermarket, and supermarkets will always sell alcohol.
And no I wouldn't apply for a job if it entailed doing something I didn't believe in!

China, so it's the use of the word 'they' that causes you problems? Mmmm ..... I can't think of an alternative word to use. Can you?
You say we are all governed by the same rules, but we're not. As this question demonstrates, after securing a job and agreeing to carry out the duties that job entails, some people ask for, and get, rules changed to suit themselves, and in doing so become exempt from rules that apply to everyone else around them.

i aggre with Naomi!
i think there is one rule for us and another entirely different rule for them!
You take on a job that you can do fully and to the best of your ability! If you can't, then don't do it, leave and let someone else who is willing to perform all aspects of it, have a chance!
There are plenty of other jobs out there that won't interfere with their religion!!!!!!!!!! In the words of Catherine Tate.............Its a f*****g liberty!!!! lol
This is a basic task of supermarket work! It IS that simple!!!!

Naomi - you are all picking and choosing your data to fit the argument you want to make.
I can only believe it's to back up a persecution complex.
Read IanLawlessex's post about the woman who refused to serve the morning after pill.
Why are we endlessly debating this one stroppy clerk in Swiss Cottage and not that one?
Because this one's a moslem
This is a single incident with one manager and the "PC gone mad" community has lept on it like a tiger and triumphantly held it aloft in a feeble attempt to show that it proves they're being "descriminated against in their own country"
Even the moslem religious leaders are saying that this guy is out of order trying to build some sort of conspiracy out of this incident is nonsense
I suggest you await a better opportunity

Number of people who believe in over the top Political correctness in this country = 0
Number of people who introduce a piece of ill advised council or work legislation in an effort to impress their bosses = maybe 2-3 a month.
Number of people who hysterically believe that they're fighting a massed army intent on destroying their value system = half the d*mn country.
Go back to home people, there's nothing to se here.

Jake, we're not all picking and choosing data to fit the argument - we're responding to the question which involves supermarket staff. I have read Ianlawlessex post, and if the woman who refused to serve the pill had been the subject of the question, my response would have been the same. It's wrong for anyone to accept a job knowing full well there are some aspects of it they are unable to carry out.
Thank you for the psychological assessment - I'll bear that in mind.
