just lying where they fell from the trees, I expect.

It's the pumpkin season - people buy them in October to make jack o'lanterns around Halloween. (And also to eat, of course.) The hot weather had actually brought the crop forward while making the changing of foliage colour late. It was in the 80s most days when I was there, which isn't bad for Oct.
