Benefit cheat who invented 7 children in just over a year
A 25-year-old woman received over 40,000 in benefits over 18 months for seven children she completely invented. She registered for child support for 'quadruplets' and then only eight months later she asked for more benefits for another baby, and then the following week she registered yet another baby for more payments. A while later she called the tax credit line to ask for more financial support for fictional child number SEVEN. Suspicions arose after this and investigators were sent to her house to see to see what was going on. When investigators arrived they found only one child who wasn't one she was claiming for. She now faces prison. What do you think? How should fraudsters like this be punished? Should be forced to pay the money back? Or would a prison sentence be better?

Put it this way. When I worked in a shop, if a shoplifter came in and stole some merchandise it was both the shoplifter and the staff who had their knuckles whacked.
The thief was told off by the coppers and we were disciplined by the bosses for not doing our jobs properly.
It was up to us as staff to look after the merchandise and make sure it was distributed in exchange for money...not taken without money changing hands.
Catch my drift?

Because it is going to be near on impossible to get 40k back.
And we have stealth taxes to compensate ;o)
You add it all up ~ this woman isn't the only one who has committed fraud. There are thousands of people doing it every day. Tax payers lose shedloads simply because the government bodies cannot sort it all out.
The overpayment in tax credits to innocent citizens is still going on....

Revfunk: is there a big difference between stealing from the state and stealing from banks then?
Interesting that you think she should be sent to prison, but presumably you shouldn't be even though you brag about the fact that you haven't repaid your debts (or stealing as other people call it).

I owed 40K, moved address, didn't leave a forwarding one, didn't go on the electoral register and 3 1/2 years later no-one has found me and to my knowledge there are no CCJ's against me and I have not been declared bankrupt.

I didn't say that you have committed fraud - I said that you have stolen money - ie taken it and not repaid it.
If you can justify that to yourself then that is up to you - but it irritates the hell out of me when you complain about other people who have done (in my eyes) a similar thing and want them sent to prison.
Get of your high horse - you are (in my eyes) nothing but a criminal. If that makes me sad then so be it.
Also just in case you can't count, you posted that answer in September - it is now November - just over 2 months not several. For some bizarre reason I have the ability to remember things from two months ago - isn't that amazing.

Violent criminals and even murders are being let out of prison many years short of their original sentences because the prisoners are full.
They are full of people like this woman who commit fraud because it is easy to do so. Or people who do not pay their Council Tax or Television License.
I would sooner the violent people were behind bars and this woman made to do a job that serves the community and pays back the full 40,000.

Curious as to why I am a sad f****r?
Is it because (a) I have a memory? (b) because I can count or (c) because I point out your hypocrisy?
By not paying your debts off you have certainly broken certain civil laws. Am not sure if you have broken any criminal laws (though I suspect that you probably did not register on Voter's Role as lenders will often chase non-payers that way - and I believe that is a criminal offence)
If you are happy with your ethics, then that is fine. I just feel that you are not the right person to judge the person in this article.
After all - both of you have 'stolen' 40,000. Both of you knew what you were doing. One of you stole it from the government by filling it false information, the other stole it from companies and moved away and intend not to pay them back.
In my eyes, you are just as guilty as this woman.
