'The Good old Days...'

I've been tossing this around in my head for a while, and I just can't work it out.

The question is, what exact time are people referring to when they harp on about everything being better in 'the good old days'? Seeing as fair few of such folk frequent AB, I thought I'd extend the question.

Be warned, though, I am shamelessly spoilng for an argument and will pounce upon any and all responses like a frenzied rabbit...

We prefer to call it Merseyside (don't like to be associated with that lot across the park) but yes born and bred scouser.
But quickly BTP these health professionals are they the ones who say you should get treated last because you're fat, because you smoke, because you drink, or were riding a motorcycle, doing dangerous sports etc? If so then these are the people who truly know the cost of everything and the value of nothing, our hospitals would be glittering examples of modernity, efficiency and scientific knowledge if it were'nt for all those horrid sick people. I know that's not what you'd say, but in essence that's what's in the papers.

123 You choose to highlight one infection out of many - the one that is prevalent in society in general. And you say I should be a politician! Yes new patients are screened for MRSA, but those, like my husband, who aren't infected when they enter hospital, catch that, and more, whilst they're there - and of course the hospital that recently discharged the two new mothers who died, denied responsibility. Are you naive enough to expect anything else? I didn't say visitors don't bring infection into hospitals, I said that visitors aren't the reason that hospitals are rife with infection. If visitors were the reason, then private hospitals would experience the same levels of infection as NHS hospitals - and they don't. Plainly and simply, poor hygiene is the cause. As for the new guidelines on treating smokers, drinkers and the overweight, you conveniently forget that the government runs the NHS, the same as it runs everything else.

My experience with the police is good, but I have to admit that apart from when my home was burgled, when they were very helpful, I have had very little contact with them - and why should I? However, since the police are regulated by the government, I fail to understand why you don't place responsibility for the poor service you've experienced with them.

You say I haven't offered any solutions, so it seems, yet again, you're either not reading what I've said, or you're not understanding it. Nevertheless, I'll repeat it. Get rid of Government targets, get rid of Government interference, and let the professionals do the jobs they were trained to do. Government ministers are not experts - but they are. Is that clearer?

I don't understand why you say I protest too much, or that I've put words into your mouth, and it really doesn't matter to me whether you like me or not, 123. As far as I'm concerned, this is just a discussion between two faceless strangers, and frankly I don't know why I'm bothering, since you appear to think this Government can do no wrong.

You don't read the tabloids, but you read the People? What do you consider that to be then?

Since this Government is not a Labour Government, I will vote Conservative at the next election.

Ludricous arrests, it's amazing they bother to show up. Naomi I'm not lying to you when I tell you about the experiences I've had with the Police. I blame them because I speak to them and then see them do nothing they're adults and have the ability to exercise judgement. We're just following orders did'nt cut the mustard in the last century, it's not going to cut it now.
In several of those incidents they could have made arrests,but did'nt bother.
It appears ironic that you use the same barometer for Police performance (did they catch the burglar?) as you use for the N.H.S, I got an infection in hospital in 1973 (Ted Heath I think, that's not relevant though) private hospitals deal with far fewer people (are the duty bound to reveal infection rates?) the peoblem before was funding (chronic lack of funding) that takes years to put right, the problem now is bad managers who can't do the job and seek to lay the blame elsewhere (all bosses do that).
Who is it who proposes that the obese etc. should go to the back of the queue? The day elected officials start saying that, is the day they should start looking for a new job. This government is'nt perfect (no government is) but as I said earlier it's the least worst government of my lifetime, and that's the only effective barometer I can think of when it comes to voting. Even when by doing so I refer back to the good old days! :-))

I believe what you say about the police, but I don't know why anyone would speak to the police regularly, unless they put themselves into unhappy situations, or their job involves contact with the police. However, that's irrelevant - it's your business.

As far as I'm aware, they didn't catch the burglar - at least they didn't catch anyone in possession of my belongings - but a little while later, police from two different counties did invite to me go along and have a look at the Aladdin's Cave of recovered items each had acquired. Unfortunately, my things weren't in either.

I'm losing the will to live with this discussion - perhaps I'll see you on another thread. Bye for now.

Thanks for the tip, I caught scarletina and had to get my skin grafts done again.
I tend not to follow statistics slavishly, I draw on personal experience, you're very quick to draw on statistics to prove a point and even quicker to disregard personal expeiences to ignore them
I work with the public as a bus driver, I deal directly with about 1200 people a week (obviously more indirectly), I'm out all hours of the day and night, all over the city I see alot of crime and (when they're around) alot of disinterested Police, once someone was throwing the contents of their kitchen onto the street (a flat in a nice part of town) Police came "attempted criminal damage" he called it took a statement all very serious snd proffesional told me I could go waited for 5 minutes and then he left, did'nt even knock on the door! Added to that I work in a large depot (not a small office like alot of people) so consequently I have access to the experiences of around 500 people every day on breaks etc. So I suppose you could say I deal with around 1700 people a week.
I've just come back from visiting my dad in hospital, spotless, he's very happy with his treatment (knee replacement) but says the food's awful! There are also set visiting times and I was told off by the doctor for sitting in his chair (he was getting X-Rayed) so things are looking up. Under funding was the issue previously, now it's frontline management. The N.H.S is getting better.
