Racism, Blacks and Monkey's.

The Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds was called a "monkey" by Harbajan Singh during a recent test match. And those of you not familiar with cricket, this has caused quite a stir.

Now my point is Andrew Symonds DOES look like a monkey. Because he is the only coloured chap in the Aussie set up (he is from Abo extraction) this has be deemed racist.

Why????

Although a Christian I fully accept we come from monkey's (Primates). It is only natural therefore that some people will resemble their forefathers.

If I say Lee Evans, Will Young, Daniel Craig, Gary Lineker and Wayne Rooney all look like monkey's, am I being racist? No, because they are wgite. But they bloody well do!!!

Yes, although not an evolutionary debate other people look like other animals. Jade Goody looks like a hog, Celine Dion looks like a ostrich, Princess Anne looks like a horse, Vinnie Jones looks like a staffie and the guy who played Mickey Pearce on Only Fools and Horses looks like a rodent.

I can see that maybe during our Empire, (not long after Darwin) coloured Africans were seen as primitive and were depicted as apes, but they did shrink heads and eat other tribe members, so a little banter did no harm. But now I fail to see why Symonds has got the hump. If you see the guy, he is built like the proverbial brick sh*t house and will take fools lightly.

Why, dear ABers, is monkey such a bad insult ONLY to blackies and not whities?

I could be wrong but I am sure whoopi goldberg was in Gorillas in the mist.
Keep it coming, lads. Keep it coming.

Looking forward to the next debate on political correctness when you all get in tizzy and start crying that you're forever being told what you can and can't say.

Enjoy the moment, kids.
I think Bewlay is courting an issue very cleverly here. IS it racist to think someone looks like a monkey? NO its not at all. To go up to someone and say it to their face, forget racism Is just damn right nasty. We dont like people pointing out our flaws and to go about saying it to people with no respect for their feelings is a sad indictment of this once great country.
So the term monkey a long phrase USED in a very racist manner to offend and belittle a race of people is now taboo and is not a word used very often in society to describe someone of darker skin and good i say, it really isnt a big deal for me to not use one word in the english language when I know it could cause such offence to another human being - Is that so hard to accept Bewlay?
Plants butt firmly in the seats next to Quin and Sherman

You both put it a lot better than me.

The Sherman, you have missed my point 110 percent.

Yes I am aware calling an ENTIRE race of people monkeys may be racist. I am aware that other words are used as racist insults but.......................

Andrew Symonds looks like a bloody Monkey. Frank Bruno doesn't, Stevie Wonder doesn't, Denzle Washington doesn't, Patrick from Eastenders doesn't.

As I and others have said many white folk look like monkeys too.

It is not a racist slur.

If I said Andrew Symonds due to his skin being dark and being atavistically closer to apes and his natural smell being similar to a chimp and those big rubbery black lips and flat nose looking like Guy the Gorilla YES I AM RACIST. But all I would say is he looks like a bloody monkey.

If Maxi Priest said Wayne Rooney looked like a monkey there is no problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry I can not express my point any clearer.

1) Andrew Symonds looks like a monkey. FACT

2) Will Young looks like a monkey. FACT

Which one of the above is racist?????

Answer: NONE

Real answer ONE. Why? Because Symonds is black.

Absolutely toilet.
I have to agree.

Will Young does look like a monkey.
This is very funny.

A chap in our local is nicknamed "zoonie" because he is the spitting image of the monkey in Fireball XL5.

He is white, if he was black would it cause a riot, I think yes.
I guess at absolute best you could be proving an utterly pointless point. I could call half the country motherf***ers, and almost 100% w*nkers, and wow, I'd be technically correct (ps I don't agree that Symonds looks like a monkey, but for the sake of this moronic point), but the fact would remain that it would be deeply offensive and entirely wrong to call people that.
You are right there, nick.

I wouldn't call Will Young a monkey to his face ~ it might cause a fight and I think he may win.

Ha haha, I never thought of all those people looking like monkeys till now, but they do kinda

'course its only racist if directed at a non-white person

now...Ive been told I look like Yoda, but also that I look like Mrs Doyle from Father Ted, two entirely different looks - sigh
Question Author
weeal, I do believe that Jedi is a recognised religion in the UK since the last census because people insisted on being called Jedi Knights.

Now if you are called Yoda at work, especially if you work in the civil service, you could probably sue for thousands, if not millions.

I never thought of Wayne Rooney as a monkey. I did think of something else to compare him to, but it really isn't nice.

As it's my birthday I don't want to be flamed. I am already feeling a little fragile!

I find it ironic and amusing that the perpetrator is an Indian. I thought they were - almost by definition - incapable of racism.

Isn't the caste system they operate in India equally as bad as racism?

Regarding similarties dare I say Sol Campbell?

.

oh Happy Birthday Pippa !! hope youve had a lovely day

(apols BB for wee cheery blip in your thread tee hee)
Thanks weeal :o)
Jedi is an ennumeration category for - and only for - statistical purposes in the national census after loads of tw@s decided, on the basis of incorrect information, to declare it as their religion. It is not, and never has been a religion. There is also an enumeration category for people who scrawled illegible rubbish. That's not a religion either.

Sherman has made the most pertinant point though (apart from those noting the fact that Sherman doesn't even look like a monkey). All that is being demanded is the right to be needlessly crass and rude to people on the basis of their appearance.

It's ironic that it's largely the same people constantly decrying falling standards of British public behaviour that are getting upset over not being able to be unpleasant to people who have done nothing to deserve the abuse.

Even if Mr Symonds did resemble a monkey, anyone of just ordinary intelligence would know it would be an act of considerable impoliteness and boorishness to point such a fact out. Knowing - again as any person of merely average intelligence must do - that the term 'monkey' has been historically used as a term of racial abuse, doubles the unacceptability of this behaviour.
Whoops - 'Symonds doesn't look like a monkey' - I've no idea what Sherman looks like, but obviously I wouldn't point it out anyway.
What is deliciously interesting now is that a Jamaican (i.e. black) umpire has been dropped, but the racist (cue screams) insults made by an Indian (brown-skinned person, chill a bit here) is still in limbo. You can sense the tension, how simple it could be if one of them were White.

This is the 21st century mateys. Minter may well be a fascist - and that is not such a bad thing in 2008 - but he is not a racist - he just pinpoints absurdities and facts. I don't like hooded black gangs. Not solely because they are black, which would be racist, but because of unrelated things like stabbings and shootings with which they have become associated. Undeservedley I hasten to add, in Britain 2008 HAVE to hasten to add.

This is tomorrow's world.

Which one of us pasta-knitting lefties has suggested Mr Singh hasn't been racist or that his skin colour in any way excuses such behaviour..? None as far as I can see.

Are you sure this 'black people can't be racist' notion isn't just a facet of your kerr-azy imagination? After all, anyone who is capable of convincing themselves that 'white' is genuinely an oppressed minority obviously has a vivid one.
Mr Bewlay, i was feeling a bit down until i read your question, it made me laugh and cheered me up, it is the best and funniest question i have seen for some time. if it wasn't meant to be funny i must have a strange sense of humour dont you think.
