In an age when it seems only muslim immigrants are able to stay at home counting their benefits isn't reassuring to know that once a year, the rest of us can rise to the challenge. Having phoned in sick today myself with an acute credit card bill, I am happy to celebrate and be part of this unofficial national holiday.

Quite right. You don't get any thanks for not pulling a sickie. I used to work beside a guy that added an acceptable level of sick days when he counted his annual holiday entitlement.

the owner of the business where i worked in my youth had it about right,

if someone said 'fred' is off sick today to him his reply always would be 'ok which ward is he on, ill send some flowers and fruit'

if youre not confined to a hospital bed his opinion was you dont feel any more ill at work than at home

having been self employed for over 25 years now and if you dont shift your butt nothing gets done and you dont earn, i tend to agree

dont you see if your mate didnt adobt his poncing attitude, providing of course he has something to contribute,you would get more money, either as a result of getting rid of him and spreading his meagre output thinly over the remaining staff or the profit on his production when he does show up going into the joint kitty,
