http://tinyurl.com/6n3p56 Don't know why, but I am disappointed. But good for her for admitting it.

I am disappointed because she always maintained she was happy to be big, then put her weight loss down to a healthy lifestyle - even to the point of advertising Ryvitas.
As always, I did read the whole article before commenting and I do know she exercises hard and eats well. But could she have done it without the surgery?

But in a way it was the truth anyway. A band does limit the amount that someone wants to eat, so she was taking in less calories- hopefully healthy calories.
What will be interesting if she remains curvaceous rather than going for the stick insect look, that would be a positive role model.
I always find when women who are significantly overweight claim they are happy, I am highly suspicious. Not because I believe that women should conform to some ridiculous constructed idea of feminine attractiveness (as a hardline feminist I celebrate all sizes and shapes), but being a lot overweight is not comfortable. Even if you can get past the pressure of being slim, being significantly overweight is harder work, I know from personal experience

I feel a bit disappointed really. Okay she has adopted a healthy lifestyle and good for her but people would think that they too can achieve the same results only to discover that her weight loss was given a considerable kick start by this surgery. I am overwieight and I know that realistically a healthy lifestyle is the way to lose the weight - there are no miracle "cures". I'm not happy being overweight but it's down to me and me alone to do something about it. Just too bone idle really!
Surely at the end of the day, it is her business and hers only that she had a band fitted. It probably encouraged people to realize if they ate healthily and exercised,a lot of people could lose weight too. Most of the people who feel disappointed that she didn't 'come clean!' are not on the telly like she is, but are happy to criticize her after the fact became known. I think it must have been difficult for her, especially married to Phil Vickery, not to want to eat what he cooked! I'd probably be like the 'good year blimp' if I lived with him!!!
Love Fern- she's terrific! So the answer is - don't complain- eat less!!

Still think their is far too much emphasis these days on people's shape and size and slimming, etc. etc. Yes, very overweight people should be concerned for their health. I think Fern basically lost weight for health reasons. She has a happy marriage a gorgeous husband, nice kids and is basically a happy person, fat or thin.
The media is obsessed with slimming and body shape and the public have all got sucked in with it. To be healthy and happy we need to be comfortable with ourselves and our appearance. Overweight people don't need to be made to feel like criminals (it can drive them to depression and then to eat more).
We need to get things into perspective. One thing I would agree on is that we need to be more physically active. Forget gyms, forget fad diets, eat healthily and get out and about and enjoy yourself. All this media type is leading to food obsession!

Lol jinglepot - if it were that easy, Fern wouldn't have resorted to this surgery!
Most women have to cook for their familes, she's married to an expert in nutrition and doesn't have to cook or prepare meals several times a day.
Fern is also surrounded by professionals and experts to help her lose weight without surgery. If anybody should be able to 'stop complaining and eat less' without surgery, it is her.
Especialy with the 200,000 she's taken off Ryvita to help her.

Ethel, I agree with everything you say - except the part about Phil being in expert in nutrition LOL. A chef he may be but he is not a nutritionist ;-)
I think big women looked to her for inspiration and thought if she can do it by diet and exercise alone, then so can I. she did give the impression she had cut back on her diet and exercised more to lose her weight and yet if she had been honest to start with she would have had many 1,000's of British women behind her anyway
And anyone who thinks is is as easy to lose weight as cutting back on what you eat has never had a weight problem
