We used to be on oil heating, turned to gas 2 years ago.

Our bill is around �2000 per year (6 bedroom house). I have upgraded the loft insulation, but unfortunately, (due to the design of the house) cannot install cavity wall insulation, so am aware that we lose a lot through the sides of the house.

Make sure that we are very careful with electric as well - low wattage bulbs, taking chargers out of the sockets etc. We even bought a small oven so that we don't have to heat the whole oven (900mm one) when cooking small amounts.

Not sure that we can cut down much more.

Haven't used any oil now since January and are just using wood on a log burner in the lounge and keeping all the doors open to the rest of the house. We are fortunate in having a good supply of wood of our own as we live out in the sticks and have also just had two large trees cut down at my mother's house (which have to be seasoned before we can start burning the wood ;o( )

It is surprising how quickly we got used to not having central heating, but we are lucky in that we do have an alternative.

As we are over 60, we get a heating allowance of �200 between us - very soon that might just buy us a couple of litres of oil.

our company has just had its new prices for leccy as we were on a fixed rate. Its increased from �3500 a month to �8000 a month! What with that and fuel increases and the cost of steel tripling this year alone manufacturing in this country wont stand a chance!

Anyway, everyone's realised for yonks that oil and gas won't last forever, there's only so much of it and the easy-to-reach resources are vanishing; after that, the oil majors will have to go hunting further afield, or deeper, which will cost a lot more. It's no good saying 'something has to be done'; the only thing that can be done is create another planet and be a bit less spendthrift next time. We either have to pay more money for a dwindling resource or change our habits. I have taken to kidnapping small children and throwing them on the fire in winter - keeps me and them warm.

If too many folks switch to LPG the tax will go up. Its called "Brown's Law of Taxation".
The only 'something' that can be done is cutting down on demand or increasing supply. And the latter isn't going to happen in any hurry. Heads of State within OPEC members must be working out how many new rollers they can afford to buy by next week.

Like Lottie, I also live in the country, and have a good supply of wood for the fire, so I don't use much oil. It isn't just fuel, though. The price of food, and everything else in the supermarket, is rising rapidly too. Even the toothpaste and washing powder I buy has gone up quite considerably since last week. I dread to think how families on low incomes, and the elderly existing on state pensions, will manage this winter.
