Why is the advertising facing its worst recession in decades?

While we hear reports of a booming economy, why is there such a crisis in the advertising industry?

Id like to think it is because they have irritated people one too many times. But it may have something to do with the growth in new media, on which it doesnt require an agency to advertise. Or perhaps there is less free money available in industry for advertising?

There's a crisis in the advertising industry every few years and in my opinion it's a good thing. It's one of the most overpaid, extravagant areas of business, and if there's a cull every few years which gets rid of the surplus freeloading, so much the better. I mean, how much advertising do we need????

need or want? and define need? I personally could live without it entirely.
