Do only knighthoods from England count then?
Question Author
By jove I think he's got it. The rules are quite clear.
Erm, No one is referring to Alan Stanford as a 'Sir'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Stanford

And what rules are quite clear?
Question Author
I'm talking about the news coverage Vic.

The rules are:

- proper knighthoods are given by the British Monarch

- If you have one and are British you can be Sir......

- If you have one and you are not British you have the letters but not the prefix, EG Bob Geldof KBE
I didn't know that so my question was genuine.

I'm not a he either.
Sorry, you are talking about Allen Stanford then.

There are plenty of orders of Knighthood that are not British and are not given by the Queen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight#Orders_of_ knighthood

It's a bit like saying - well he's not a General - no one in the British Army appointed him.

Other countries are allowed their own honours system you know.

Is there no end to your jingoism?
I'm only guessing, but maybe that is the rule for Britain. Maybe the Antiguan Honours System is different.

And if we are being sticklers for accuracy, it is Allen Stanford not Alan.

You didn't object to the 'Sir' when he was buying the England Cricket team and giving away $20million.

Don't get so serious vic, it's all a bit tongue in cheek

Wrong, wrong and wrong again.

It's nothing to do with being British but a citizen of a country which has the Queen as head of state - this therefore includes most (if not all) Commonwealth countries

Incidentally, would you go up to Viv Richards and tell him that he has a 'mickey mouse' knighthood?
Viv Richards? Who is he then?
Sorry, you must be talking about Vivian Richards then.
Actually I am talking about Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards, popularly known as Viv Richards. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viv_Richards

Was Allen Stanford popularly known as Alan Stanford?
These titles were once worthy of being respected but were ruined by the likes of Lord Archer , The day titles are taken off people when they step out of line will be the day they become to be respected again , until then I apologise for all of those Sir's, Lady's and Lords who do the title jusice but I am afriad that they are meaningless whilst your fellow holders are corrupt and unsavioury ..........
