Gordon Brown WAS a bad chancellor
At last we can see the awful effect of Brown's period as chancellor.
"UK recesson will last longer" (than other countries) !
I remember people on here a few years ago saying what a great job he was doing as chancellor.
I can also remember me (and others) saying it was all smoke and mirrors and he was just lucky to be in the job during a "good" period (but still managed to muck it up).
But now the IMF has said "The recession will last longer in the UK than in any of the world's other major economies"
All thanks to Gordon's policy of giving our money away cheaply, taxing us all to the hilt, and Labour's policy of allowing anyone and everyone into this country.
Thanks Gordon (and Tony) !

About a week later Germany went in.
The Recession is likely to be bad in the UK due to the heavy dominance of financial sector and the light touch regulation that they enjoyed.
Both of which were hang overs from Tory Free market capitalism theology.
Haven't seen many of them about going on about market forces lately - have you?
I certainly don't remember any Tories jumping up 2 years ago in Parliament and calling for stiffer bank regulation and more Red Tape.
No sign of an alternative Tory wat forward yet I don't suppose?
No silly idea !

I agree Jake. The really funny thing is that the tories have no space to occupy! they cant be more Capitalist can they!?
So what can tories offer? More regulation and centralised control over the banks? That goes against all they stand for!
THey actually don't have a place in politics just now- its quite funny really

I've always said GB was the worst post war Chancellor this countries had, I came to that conclusion in about the year 1999,
But the present crisis apart, him and Blair have done so much damage I really don't think we can recover.
In a few years, watch out for the massive bloodletting, and it'll be their fault.
But i've always said that they are destroying this country, and they are succeeding.

Actually, I can remember a short while ago The Economist reported that numerous people are predicting that France and Germany (and don't even mention Spain...) will be in the doldrums longer than we will due to the UK economy's greater labour flexibility.
Of course, that also means our recession will be more severe but shorter, while other W/European countries will have a less bad recession that will last much longer.
the heavy dominance of financial sector and the light touch regulation that they enjoyed.
Both of which were hang overs from Tory Free market capitalism theology.
Which Labour gleefully embraced and was subsequently overwhelmingly endorsed by the electorate.
I'd also say it's a fallacy to say we had 'light touch' regulation: ask any businessman and they'll tell you regulation in the UK has long been very strong. The question is where the regulation has been placed, not whether it was ever there at all.

The reason we will be the last to come out of it is because our politicians will milk everthing they can out of it, to their own advantage.
Keeping us willing to accept lower wages and standard of living. Making us just pleased to hang onto a job, no matter what.
In this rip off Britain they love to see the poverty gap increase between them and us, You will see they will never go short.

Apart from ...
Destabilising the Economy
Allowing a massive net outflow of money (which they are now going to replace by printing some more!)
Borrowing irresponsibly to make his Budgets look palatable
And selling off the gold reserves to finance reckless spending
... he was quite good.
2 years ago, Labour were bragging ... "Look how far we have come under this administration"
Okay guys ... we're looking !!!!!!

15% interest rates?, great for savers, annuity rates, bad for debt ridden idiots.
10% inflation? yes got it down from 33% in the mid seventies, still don't let the context get in the way eh? 1997 UK was the strogest econonmy in the worldjanded to Gordon on plate to screw up.
3m Unemployed, yes not real jobs though jobs that where being done because Union law had made it all but impossible to fire anyone.
Vat up to 17.5%, well the 90's. That was to pay for the replacement for very fair and reasonable Community charge when the great unwashed realise they'd have to make a contribution to local funding. Horror of horrors.
Yep the 80's where the best decade by far, watching Maggie crush you socialist t055ers was a joy to behold!

Geezer
Im sorry Im must be a halfwit because i cannot find where i put I was a Socialist.
I raised the comparison with the 1980's. As I have never voted I cant see how that makes me a socialist. In fact I am a realist hence a total indifference to anything political.
All politics is rubbish and you really are niave if you think that with the Tories in power things would have been any different. I'm stilll waiting to hear david cameron's solution, perhaps he is polishing his magic wand??

*Sigh* Despite what I'm about to write, I'd like to distance myself as far as possible from R1's above post...
15% interest rates
10% inflation
High inflation and interest was only visible toward the beginning and end of the Thatcher period - in the first case because it was inherited (and successfully beaten back), and in the second because of a global recession that there's still quite clear consensus wasn't the govts' fault.
[To be fair, I suppose on the other hand, though, you could argue similarly for Brown.]
3 million unemployed
Unemployment had been creeping upwards throughout the '70s - it was only being staved off due to stagnant industries being unsustainably propped up. Nobody's saying unemployment is a good thing, but it's more or less unavoidable (and always has been) and the burst in the '80s was largely due to inflexibility in earlier decades.
Still. We're kinda getting off-topic....

R1 Geezer you really are a to55er
Im so glad you have a crystal ball as you seem to know everything about me.
FYI I was born in 1969 so remember the electricity strikes, no bread, rubbish in the streets etc.
I have never said that the 80's was better I said REMEMBER the 80's.
As far as being a genius goes I have done a supervised mensa test which gave me an IQ of 142 which makes me close to a genius and I also have a First Class Degree so am not some lefty dimwit as you so wrongly portray.
You are in fact the dimwit for thinking that the Tories or any other political party wouldnt have got us in the current mess.
