We helped to oust their first (secular) revolutionary leader (Massa Doc, check spelling) in the 1950s, to keep control of their oil.
As such we helped to return the Shah to power who was followed by his equally (if not more) brutal son to power.
We also support Israel and turn a blind eye to their incursions and attacks whilst tacitly supporting their right to possess nuclear arms.

yes but I would have thought that the great satan across the pond would be ahead of us in the "Most treacherous" stakes!
Well, we did invade that country in 1941 and forced its leader to abdicate.

The US haven't invaded yet, so I guess that makes us the most hated.
Maybe they don't like us because British bombs killed hundreds of thousands of Iranians in the Iraq/Iraq war when we armed our mate Saddam.
Question Author
Still I guess they haven't yet pledged to wipe us off the map, so thanks for small mercies eh?

So gromit when there's an axe murder you blame the hardware store I suppose!
What have we done to be the most treacherous enemy?

Er your history needs work Geezer!

Do you mean apart from invade their country in 1941?
Question Author
Well I was thinking that perhaps the Ayatollah was probably referring to more recent events when he said that but hey if you guys want to rake over the old days then enjoy!
More recently...

February 2002: Britain's improving relations with Iran suffer a major setback when Tehran rejects David Reddaway as London's new ambassador, calling him a spy.

15 October 2005: Explosions in the south-west city of Ahwaz kill four people, prompting Iran to blame British intelligence operatives.

25 January 2006: Iran says bombers who killed eight people in more bomb attacks in Ahwaz had links with British intelligence.
Let bygones be bygones. We've forgiven the French for 1066 and even enjoy the odd bit of banter between the Germans on our package holidays to Benidorm.

Is forgiveness in the Arabic dictionary?
Well people seem more than happy to rake over the old days when it comes to D-Day celebrations.

I would Imagine Iranian memories are just as long as ours
According to the Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index, Britain's least favourite country is Germany.

Is forgiveness in our dictionary?
Question Author
well fair enough guys, looks like old abdul dinnerjacket got the British lefties on the payroll, not too difficult when they hate the place anyway, so when you guys off to Tehran then?
You will never learn Geezer..............................

Well you can't learn if you do not try to learn.
R1Geezer

You asked why they don't like us.

We told you.

The thanks we get for filling in the gaps in your knowledge of history is to be accused of being on Iran's payroll.

Shame you are not Iranian, you are stupid enough to be President.
Oh come on, geezer.

You're better than that. No need to get grumpy.
Question Author
who's grumpy? I know all the ancient history stuff, that's, well ancient history, I'd rather hoped that you could evaluate the recent events, but you did your standard na na nana na approach. For what it's worth I do actually respect your studious opinions and you do on accasions illicit some positive reasctions, I just wish that on occasion you'd dump the anti British rhetoric and answer the question as I know you know it is intended.
So, within living memory, we have

- Invaded their country
- Deposed their Shah
- Stolen their oil
- Installed a puppet Shah of our own
- Sent a spy to be ambassador
- Entered their territorial waters without permission (twice)
- Armed the country they are at war with
- Been implicated in terrorist bombings in Ahwaz
- Arrested their Diplomats
- Allowed Shia holy sites to be destroyed in Iraq.

But apart from that, why do they not like us?
I don'r really care whether the Iranian clerics and their cohorts like "us" or not.

I don't care for them too much either.

The people of any country that allows themselves to be ruled by priests deserve better, if they but knew it.
do we sell them broadcast rights to eastenders ?
