Fat People
The following Amanda Platell article makes for interesting reading.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1205 112/My-visit-Fat-Central-mission-whos-really-b lame-obesity-crisis.html
The thing that amazed me most though is that many fat people seem to think the Government is to blame for their fatness.
This Government can be blamed for many things, but I fail to see how they can be blamed for making fat people eat rubbish and take no exercise.
So, are the Government to blame, or are fat people lazy overeaters?

My sister's obese. She eats too much and too fast and her portion size would be similar to what my partner and I have in a sitting. She also over feeds her kids and her daughter is now very fat.
She's a crap cook and never sat down at the table to eat. Her kids sat on the living room floor in front of the TV shoveling food into their mouths with their hands. It made me feel sick. She goes to the gym about 3 times a week. The same gym my cousin goes to and he says he's only ever seen her using the internet...!!
I think when you sit at the table with no TV, conversation makes you eat slower.

Is the government to blame - partially, but not mainly.
Could the government help more - definitely
Are fat people lazy - in the most part, yes (thought there are exceptions).
2 years ago I was 18stone 10 (I am 6 foot tall). Now I am 13st 10. This has purely been down to exercising and eating healthily.
I don't want to exercise - I got up this morning at 5.30am and went for a jog (free of charge) for 25 mins.
I then cycled to work (5 miles).
My lunch is a salad prepared from home with pasta and ham and my breakfast was oatabix. Far cheaper breakfast and lunch than most 'fat people' would consume.
If you want to lose weight, then there is no reason that you can't.
Some people don't want to - or may have psychological problems - and that is where the government can help. I am not sure if it is available, but counselling should be free and easy to get. There should also be 'clinics' where you can learn to cook meals (maybe even get supermarkets to do this?). Things like weight watchers should again be free.
It isn't easy to lose weight - but it can be done with will power and sometimes with help.

Why should un-greedy people have to fund that though?
I find it very hard to understand why people over eat. Personally, If I'm full I cannot eat anymore or it makes me feel sick. I can't even bare to look at food if I'm full.
Why should the tax payer foot the bill for people who can't show some restraint?

The government may be responsible for many things, but it is not responsible for obesity. There is more information on nutrition available now than theres ever been, but people who cannot control their eating habits will look for any excuse, and will often blame anything, or anyone, except themselves.
From the article ..'It is clearly linked to poverty and deprivation,' says Rosemary.
Since Rosemary goes on to concede that 'there are many poor countries in the world where people are far more deprived and yet no one is fat', her contention that obesity is clearly linked to poverty and deprivation is patently nonsense. How can obesity be linked to poverty and deprivation when some of the poorest and most deprived people in the world are not fat? In the western world, poverty and deprivation is a sorry excuse for obesity.
If you want to lose weight, ask a fat person how its done. They usually know everything there is to know about every diet thats ever been invented, but nevertheless relentlessly continue to shovel in the stodge - and for that, they can only blame themselves.

Why should un-greedy have to foot the bill? The same reason that we foot the bill for smokers, drinkers, drug takers etc. Being fat is no worse than all the other things we do to ourselves - however overeating is visible and people pick on those that are fat because they look unattractive - they need help as much as the others. The culture in this country is certainly influenced by government and to a degree then the government is partially to blame. More tax payers money is necessary to fund education and advice to help us get back on track.
But I bet most of them smoke and drink too! ;o). Just look at those beer guts on overweight men!!
I take your point though. But I still think the government has to step in before it all gets completely out of hand (if it hasn't already). I still think there is a culture of blaming everybody but ourselves if things go wrong and the governments of decades are a lot to blame for it!!

naomi - I don't think you can compare the poverty in this country to the poverty elsewhere. A 'poor' person in this country will have enough money to buy processed food on a daily basis - and it is readily available. Try going to the slums in India and asking them for a Turkey Twizzler.
Most cooking is done by handing down recipes from parents to children - again in most third world countries, these bonds are very strong (a lot of it due to necessity). Sadly, we have become a society with a pub and a takeaway on every corner.
That said, obesity cuts though all corners of society. I am in a Rotary group of 50 local business people - and certainly over 50% of them are obese - and they are generally very wealthy individuals.

...
Why should the tax payer foot the bill for people who can't show some restraint?
What about sports injuries to people who keep fit?
What about schools for those who don't have kids?
What about roads for those who cycle?
It is called living in a society and doing what is best for the general welfare of that society.
