Sorry to butt in here - but whenever I see a discussion about shotguns , it always brings to mind that episode in only fool and horses where Rodney meets girl in the market . He gets invited to her fathers country estate . They are out for a days shooting , and delboy turns up uninvited , packing a sawn off shotgun .

It is not the case that a shotgun is not classed as a "firearm" but that smoothbore firearms (such as shotguns) over a specified barrel length are treated differently within the legislation(s).
