There are numerous such cases and the police always issue similar statements:
/// Supt John Burley said: 'It does appear that the baby was recently born and we're obviously concerned that she (the mother) needs medical attention as soon as possible.///
Why aren't these cases classed as murder, and the perpetrators when found accused of infanticide?
After all it is only recently that a woman was given a long prison sentence for committing a mercy killing.
Only when the mother has took every precaution possible to make sure her baby is left in a warm and safe environment, should she when arrested, be shown tolerance.

// A newborn boy abandoned outside a mosque died in hospital after police officers waited nearly an hour to call an ambulance.
Witnesses said that a tent had been erected around the baby’s body before officers realised that he was still breathing. //

Cases are still rare though.

Thanks AOG. I was meaning the child dying due to being left is rare, though your link, without giving any totals, suggests there are more than a few. It doesn't specify if the babies died as a result of being left, or died during birth and were then abandoned.
// In 85 per cent of the cases, the mother and child are reunited. In the remainder of cases the children are usually fostered or adopted, but several babies who are abandoned are found dead. //
