Today the Tories will outline a plan to get the workshy off benefits. How can they possibly achieve this when for the past 13 years nothing has been done to solve it?

I think that 90% of the above suggestions to get people back to work and off benefits are excellent, we would make a good Government folks! : -)

Yes there has been some good suggestions, like giving food vouchers, time limiting the benefit etc.

Duncan Smith has been in opposition for years saying it needs to be fixed. I hope he has some suggestions of his own or he will be strongly criticized.

Other suggestions that have come to light include paying him 1/2 his existing dole money the other 1/2 given to his new employer to encourage the takeup.

Also doing community service for the dole; sweeping streets, clearing up, graphiti, etc sounds feasible.

The culture needs changing. Ex graduates without jobs feel that doing demeaning jobs is below their station.

I'm sure the government would welcome all suggestions.
I agree with making them work for dole, i.e. litter picking etc at least it would get them out of their pits in the mornings.
If you made people work for their dole you'd need to employ other people to make sure they turned up for work. That might defeat the purpose of the exercise.
This government is talking about stringent cutbacks. They'll achieve them by cutting back on jobs and recruitment. Should people who have been made redundant through no fault of their own be humiliated because they're unemployed?
Attacking the poor because they're poor has a real Victorian ring to it. Ian Duncan Smith has the look of the workhouse master about him.
fruitsalad excellent , my friend who has a job cleaning the streets would then be on the dole . What would he do ? I know clean the streets for his dole money not a wage.
Some on here would make good Tory MP's

Sanyroe my cousin who's at college gets £30/week for attending. One missing days absence no £30 for that week. So if he's taken on by an employer, taskforce group then the same rules apply.
rov1200 they had a scheme years ago like this. Firms just employed you for the minimum period of time then let you go. Then start someone else.Simple way of getting your work done for nothing ?
I have read every post on this thread, and while I agree with some of them it is obvious to me that certain posters have never had the misfortune to be put out of work. They are so bloody condescending, I hope it happens to them soon. I personally am in a well paid job that I love. Not all of the unemployed are scroungers. Some even attempt suicide because of it.
no SODIT there is plenty of rubbish to go round, i'm always picking it up outside my house where people drop it as they walk by, so they could start by sending some of the dole scroungers round here because we dont see many street cleaners, paid or otherwise.
caslass If and when it happens to them THEY will be the first on here to complain.
fruitsalad be HONEST to do think your council will pay for street cleaners if they can have them for FREE.
Hardly rocket science
I was out of work for 3 months and most of that time i was sat with the yellow pages on my lap and the phone by my side ringing nearly all the firms i could and also writing to them, and was lucky enough to be offered an interview and also lucky enough to be offered a job, this way, but i did have to put myself out a bit to get it, while some I know sit watching morning tv and just leave the house when its time to sign on. I realise there is genuine cases out there but there is also a hell of a lot that are just bone idle.
Think about what you have just posted fruitsalad ? If you had been picking up litter during the day when would you phone for the jobs.

At night when they are shut ?
Some people are just unemployable though. I am a lettings manager in an Estate Agents and have just had the misfortune to be called out to a house to do what we call a 'periodic inspection'. The lady of the house was greasy haired, brown toothed with one missing in the front, stank and could hardly string a sentence together. The house was in an appaling state. At the time I thought to myself "How could a woman like this ever work in public?" (She was not ill or mentally challenged)
I was out of work at the time but did'nt sit around waiting for the jobs to come to me I went out and looked for the jobs, so what i am saying is the people who are sitting around waiting for their dole money could get up off their backsides and do something about it now before they are made to pick litter or something similar to earn their dole money.
(She was not ill or mentally challenged) See how hard it is to get a job we now have qualified Doctors working as a lettings manager in an Estate Agents
SODIT they could always write a letter to various companys at night and maybe post in it the morning on their way out.
or better still if letter writing is a tad old fashioned they could always e-mail various companys in the evenings its worth a try
R1Geezer (12:20 on Thu 27/May/10) There's no shortage of jobs, these people are lazy and/or too fussy. Just stop giveing them any cash at all to spend on snout and White lightening. Give them food vouchers end of.

Where are all these Jobs ? Don't forget when Mad Maggie closed everthing down most have stayed closed down. That is the end of.
SODIT- Very presumptuous of you! I would obviously (because I know how it works on AB), not put an unsubstantiated comment, for fear of being shot-down, like you just did. I happen to know that the 'unemployable' was just that and not ill or mentally challenged as I have had to assist in compiling a report regarding the state of the house. I found my information care of environmental health.
