I've just been listening to report in the news, 55 people have been killed in a bomb attack in Yemen, 41 of whom were civilians, what can we do to stop terrorism like this spreading?

"what can we do" ? Personally, I'd steer clear of places like the Yemen for a start! You weren't thinking of having a holiday there? Is that why you've asked this rather superfluous question to which no one on here will have the answer???

I would have thought sending troops there would be a good start. It would help prevent terror on the streets of London.

We could do that JNO, but would it stop this kind of thing?
Sadly the death of 55 foreigners seems to register barely a ripple of interest amongst some, maybe if they were Israelis we'd hear a clamour, and a justification for retribution?

Middle East terrorism has escalated even since we went to war in Iraq and Afghanistan mostly Islamic countries. It may be hard to swallow but our troops shouldn't have been there in the first place. Before it was just tribal conflicts, now it has turned into national ones.

When we finally leave with out tails between our legs and lessons learnt the politicians can devote more time to shoring up our broken societies.

Similar acts of terror have gone on in disparate parts of the world for centuries.
Modern media make it so that we now hear about it 'immediately'.
How many times a day, and for whom, should I be wringing my hands ?

I may be failing to see 'the big picture' here but I fail to see quite how much influence *I* can have on the world stage...........

I believe that part of the probem is the difference in attitudes between East and West.

In the West, religion is a choice, a part of life. In the East, it IS life, woven into the fabric of the national psyche.

In the West, we have professional soldiers who do a 'job'. In the East we have men who are more than willing to die for the freedom to live their lives as they see fit.

In the West, we have the arrogance to presume that democracy fits everyone, and should be imposed on other nations. In the East, they have a tribal society that has existed since medieval times, and they fiecely resent the invasion of others trying to chnage them without their interest, much less their consent.

To me, the defintion of 'terrorism' depends whose rifle barrel you are staring down, and whose bombs are decimating your bit of the planet.

Diplomacy and communication will stop terrorism, as Churchill said, 'Jaw jaw, not war war.'

He was right then - he is right now.

If we stop invading other nations and forcing our beliefs on them, they will stop sending people to kill our civillians.

It sounds simple --- it is.

Andy has made a hugely valid point here, something that has been going on for years and the answer to there and our problem just smacks you in the proverbial s.....Why can't we see things in front of our nose anymore?
