At last someone from the younger generation has finally admitted that the last two generations have wrecked Britain.
Now 'us old ones' can sit back with a smug expression on our faces, and say "there I told you so, Britain was much better in our time".
If that is what one calls 'instant gratification' then yes, it sure was when I read this.

There has always been good and bad THINGS about all periods in history.
There has also been good and bad PEOPLE in all periods in history.
I think it is a bit much of Nick Clegg to say what he said.
There are plenty of people around today who work hard, save, live honestly and so on.
In the same way there were criminals 70 or 100 years ago.
I have read a number of books about famous people in history and it seems it was very common to die leaving loads of debts so that is not new.
There is a program on TV at the moment about the massive increase in crime that went on during the second world war so not everyone "did their bit" during the war.
Cleggs statements are far too sweeping.

Rose coloured spectacles I think.
Go back 100 years
Many people dying of TB, Smallpox, Measles etc.
Many children not living beyond their first year.
People working long hours with no holiday.
No trade unions.
Factories and houses belching out smoke covering buildings with dirt and cities with smog.
Houses with no indoor toilets and bathrooms.
Poor sanitation.
No health service.
Workhouses and bleak prisons.
Suggest you watch a few episodes of "Who do you think you are" on TV to see how awful some lives were not that long ago.

Blimey VHG I am not that old, although I do remember some of those disadvantage.
You mentioned the rise in crime during WW2, yes maybe it did rise in some aspects.
Because of the shortages you were bound to get those ready to cash in, just as they do now with counterfeit goods etc.
Because of the Blackout, some less desirables took advantage of the completely dark streets.
But there were less young men on the streets, due to them being in the Forces, so there would not be many big criminals, only the petty things carried out by the old men.
Regarding murders
Homicides per million population in England and Wales
Year Homicides
1900 9.6
1910 8.1
1920 8.3
1930 7.5
1940 ..
1950 7.9
1955 6.3
1960 6.2
1965 6.8
1970 8.1
1975 10.3
1980 12.5
1985 12.5
1990 13.1
1995 14.5
1997 14.1
Homicide in England and Wales includes the offences of murder, manslaughter and infanticide.
The rate of homicides peaked in
the mid-1990s. In 1995 14.5
homicides were committed per
million of population.
· Since the early 1960s the number
of homicides per million
population has more than doubled.
So you see VHG I think it is you who has the rose tinted specs.
Please don't force me to make a list of the disadvantages made to this country during the period of the last two generations.

/// Do you make these posts deliberately to stir up sh!t ?///
Only reporting on a conclusion come to by a person who is better educated than you or I together.
As regards getting out more, I get out enough thank you very much, but then there is more 'sh!t' out there than I could ever stir up on here.

Hey AOG
Why do your statistics stop in 1997 - when the Labour Government came in?
Could it be because it doesn't suit your argument?
Because it peaked in the mid 90s and dropped sharply under Labour
