At last someone from the younger generation has finally admitted that the last two generations have wrecked Britain.
Now 'us old ones' can sit back with a smug expression on our faces, and say "there I told you so, Britain was much better in our time".
If that is what one calls 'instant gratification' then yes, it sure was when I read this.

Given that a generation is about 30 years, I think Clegg's reference to his parents' generation would include anyone born after about 1930. If that doesn't include you, you're entitled to consider yourself exempt from his criticism, though there won't be many in a position to agree with you.

I bet you thought you were damn right clever, sorry to disappoint you.
I obtained my statistics from this paper (no not the Daily Mail) but,

the murder rate hit a 20-year low last year

so Jake's suggestion that things got better under Labour seems to be accurate, though of course it doesn't show up in the 20th-century report you cited.

Anyway - the focus shouldn't be so narrow.
The chances of anyone on AB being murdered is extremely small (1 in 19,000 according to http://www.splung.com...ent/sid/1/page/logs).
There are many factors that need to be taken into account when assessing the quality of one's life, but "Am I likely to be murdered" should appear way, way, way down the list.
