where: a) most indiginous population hate their own country
b) Even though a) may be true they seem to prefer to live here and *** it off rather than move. Is the grass really greener?
I've been on my holidays for a fortnight and though it was great, it is good to be home. I was in Turkey and they are very patriotic and proud of their nation and its origin.
But you do notice on returning everyone seems very down on Britain, and as you say, sIag it off all the time. They should snap out of it, Britain has so much going for it, and is better than most places to live.
It seems to be in the British psyche to run things down. Not helped by some sections of the media. It doesn`t mean everybody hates living here. I don`t. An no, the grass definitely isn`t always greener.
Most people who would like to move abroad don't do it because they are afraid of the unknown. The most common excuse I hear is ' would love to move to france/ spain/cyprus/greece/italy/portugal..but there's the grand children. They would probably see the grandchildren more often if they lived somewhere nice and would have them all summer holiday until they were glad to see the back of them.
Of course one of the major problems is that so many people seem to think that Britain is that small quarter whey they live and what they see on TV.
I swear the next person that tells me how overcrowded this country is is going to get Kidnapped and dumped in the middle of East Anglia or Lincolnshire
jomifl....interesting comment. I would say that the commonest reason for locating back to the UK was to be near the grandchildren ( mainly the mothers, rarely the fathers ;-) and as soon as they have moved back to the UK, the children then either move to another part of the UK or emigrate.
Absolutely Sqad,I have lost count of the number of people who have moved or not moved house to be near somebody and within a couple of years that somebody has either died, emmigrated, or gone to the other end of the country. I know of a couple who gave up their council house in suffolk to live in a caravan near their daughter in hampshire only for her to move to the channel islands. They had left their friends and lost their house for no benefit.
And in a few years the grand children have become adults and vanished to the ends of the earth, leaving grandad and grandma, in their terraced house in neasden, breathing traffic fumes and living in fear of being mugged, burgled or given a rates bill.
My Aunt and her husband retired to Australia to be with his son in Sydney and then his son moved to Perth!!
I would never move to be near my child or any grandchildren I might have in the future (unlikely). It's just not fair and besides that I don't want to be a babysitter or childminder.
I will stick in the UK, I like the changing seasons and the British countryside and I speak the language quite well. I wouldn't mind a second home on the Algarve though, but am not rich enough!!
I certainly don't hate it here generally but there are some things I hate about it.
