I'm glad that they're out and all survived.
But I can't help but feel that it offers a succinct demonstration of how governments create heroes to hide unpalatable facts.
FACT, this mine is dangerous as are most mines in the country.
FACT, if these miners had all died we wouldn't have heard about it and there certainly wouldn't be a load of threads talking about it.
FACT, miners in Chile will still be paid a pittance.
FACT, mines in Chile will still be dangerous.
FACT, we still won't care in a few days time, just so long as we can get stuff cheap.
I don't wanna be a misery guts, I'm a trade unionist to my boots, I sincerely hope that the outcome of this even is a GLOBAL push for mining safety throughout the region and throughout the world.
That miners, throughout the world, will enjoy the protection of law that their safety at work is a human right.
I won't hold my breath....

It is great news they are alright, I just hope they get the help they need to get menmtally fit. Will things change about miners safety? I hope so, but am not too sure.

i hope some good does come out of this situation. at least people around the world will be aware that not everyone works in a clean and safe environment, imo manual workers do a great job but rarely appreciated for it. i remember my family working in steel works and their health being affected.

Mining accidents are a daily occurence in the developing world, look at China, in Bolivia there was a mine that was British and Canadian owned, terrible safety, terrible wages, went bust owing the workers money, the government took it over in the end but it was still closed.
I wonder if the other miners have been getting paid whilst the pit's been shut?
Within weeks that mine will be operational, and I'll be amazed if anybody is held to account for it.
Of course by then Rooney will have screwed another granny, Colleen will be wearing a new pair of shoes and Victoria Beckham will have a new hairdo and we'll all just carry on like before....

Not all mines are dangerous, some are certainly more dangerous than others, this is certainly one of the more dangerous ones.
Good practice and high mainainance breeds safe mines, but that costs money, that costs more money than it does to hire new miners to replace the dead ones, it's the cycle of grinding poverty and callous global disinterest that sends men back down those pits again and again and again.
Not that you'd care.

In the end, it was a great achievement and a real good news story. For myself, I was disappointed by the pretty blatant handling of the timeline of the rescue to allow for political posturing in front of the camera by the President, but I suppose in this day and age that is to be expected.
A difficult rescue, carried out efficiently and ahead of schedule.
It is as well to remember that this whole issue only came about because of dangerous mining practice though...

I noticed the president was there throughout the rescue and gave a stirring political speech.
Is this the same president whose government has refused to adopt the UN health and safety
acts . Many of which have been on the table since 1992 ?
