student protest
watching the latest peaceful protest that the students are having today has made me wonder whatever happened to the water canons or tear gas or rubber bullets.. has this country got soft?

one person who i use to have a drink with got grabbed , the guy had not done anyting wrong but he was in the crowd

Sqad read my post above , i have seen it first hand
leaving the match one day walking to the station next to some of the home fans , couple of blokes waking with a young lad talking . well the paper said they are like animals but i have not seen any trouble.
i turned round and said when you treat people like animals they will behave like animals
when i got to the station i get a whack across my back, shouted at and then pushed over to near the wall of the station . that was just to go and see a game of football

point is though, in my view, that by the public at large watching these actions (daubing nelsons column, breaking things, smashing things up etc etc) and the police standing back and letting the world see it, is that joe public will begin to react against protestors - seeing their "protest" as mere opportunitistic mayhem and civil unrest with no real point other than to cause damage. this can be evidenced on many ab threads including this'un.
if the plods charged in on horses, or started firing bullets and using water cannons, the greater wider public would begin to have sympathy for the protesters, even if we thought they deserved a good hosing down.

I have had some experience in security/marshalling of the public.
It never fails to suprise me how diffferent a set of events can be reported by two parties. You mostly find that somewhere in between the two stories lie the facts of the matter.
I have been accused of heavy handidnes in the past and it was totally fabricated. The guy was intoxicated and the matter never went further than initial allegations... suprise suprise.

with the cut backs, the Government can't afford the tear gas or rubber bullets.
No, it shouldn't be necessary as 95% plus of this is peaceful.
The issue is that the Government is not getting its message across........
However, I also feel that the UK seems to be gravitating to 3 or 4 different tuition systems is highly divisive and, to some extent highly confusing both for academia and gown.
