Elton John and his partner have become parents, with the birth (by a surrogate mother) of a baby boy.

Last year in the Ukraine, they were turned down from adopting because the Ukraine did not accept civil partnerships and also because of his age, he was then quoted as saying :

/// "David always wanted to adopt a child and I always said no because I am 62 and I think because of the travelling I do and the life I have, maybe it wouldn't be fair for the child" ///.

So what's changed?

I;m 55 and I have the opposite views to sammo who can't use age as an excuse for their opinion,I have worked alongside gay people since I was 16 and I would never have dreamt that i was any diffferent, more worthy, or more or less deserving of a loving family home.
eyethenkyew - What about the absent Fathers? Are all the children doomed?

(and the occasional absent Mothers)
And how do we go about changing the world into a more equitable place, R1 ?
Sqad - <nothing to do with homosexuality - the question is 'Is He Too Old' <

You were right, education is a wonderful gift................................haha sorry, I could'nt resist..........(:0 D
Den...sorry...I am not being awkward.......what have I said that is incorrect?
Sqad - I was making reference to your 'Qualified' post.................its too late now, the moment has gone (:0 (
Den...sorry........I could create "another moment " for us!
It's a slow process jack, do you suggest that the children of gays are accepable collateral damage to make it acceptable one day?

I just read that out to my OH...he just shook his head.
this is just more rigt wing twaddle from aog. no, he's not too old. no, just because he is gay will not make him a bad parent. the child will have two loving parents in a long-term relationship - which is more than most kids these days. children just want to be loved...and if you show and tell them that they are secure in themselves and flourish. my mum beat the crap out of me when i was a child and scarred me forever. it has affected my life greatly, contributed to mental illness and i rarely seek out friedships with females as i just don't like them. this happened within a heterosexual marriage with middle class parents and they still managed to f*** things up. i reckon elton and david will do a far better job. good luck to them x

They won't be the acceptable collateral fortunately. It will ensure that it's the bullies who are excluded/suspended.

After the recent publicity over gay suicides in the US, we're already seeing the tide turning.

But back to the question - is he too old? Nope...that would be agist.
I am definitely an old fart (83) but I agree with sqad. I have known several homosexuals and they have all been very nice people. Kind and caring and gentle. Perhaps I have been lucky to know the right ones. However, I also think age matters. I was 18 when my youngest brother was born. My mother was 44. My brother had an old mother when he was 16 so that instead of going to her for advice he came to me. I can see that it would be even worse to have a parent aged 62 when I was born and of course at when the child is 16 Elton will be 78. Not good - a man of 78 will not be able to relate to a young person of 16. Well, that's my opinion for what it's worth.
I don't accept that playground bullying is any reason for gay people NOT having children.

I realise that it may mean that *You* would have to temper the ways in which you refer to and speak about gay folks.....and that is probably more of a dilemma for you.

ummmm

Once again just because you don't think it is necessary for children to bond with their mothers, doesn't make it right.

Nature has made it so that a child is the result of a sexual relationship between a male and a female, and it is the female that carries their young for 9 months, but it doesn't end there, there is still a great deal of bonding between the mother and her baby to take place.

/// I put no value on having money either.///

Yet it was you who brought up the matter of being born into money.

/// AOG - are you outraged about the amount of men that get young women pregnant and then do a runner??? ///

For a start I have shown no 'outrage' on this thread, and secondly what has your other point got to do with Elton John becoming a Father/Mother?
By the way - good to see a celebrity couple in a strong relationship starting a family. They've been together for 17 years, without so much as a sniff of a sex scandal.

Unlike...

Peter Crouch
Mark Owen
David Beckham
Tiger Woods
Darren Day

I could go on, but you know what I mean...
Starbuck - they live in a different world to us
yes I imagine he would agree ummmmm, the logic is innescapable. Most of us hope that one day this kind of thing will not be a target for bullying in school, however jack and co are happy to sacrifice todays children of gays to progress to that state of affairs, sound like collateral damage to me.
R1Geezer

Would you have said the same thing to interracial couples in the 70s?

"Your mixed race kids will be bullied at school - don't do it".

The energy used to worry about bullying should be directed AT the bullies. Let's make them the outcasts.

/// this is just more rigt wing twaddle from aog. ///

I do not know how being right-wing has got anything to do with me asking the question "is Elton John too old", I myself cannot see what politics has to do with this matter.

But then having read the rest of your post, I forgive you for your insult, on the grounds of your sad upbringing, and mental illness, and I hope that one day you will find love and put the past behind you.
I agree SP, how do we change it?
