In WW II Our control was largely of the sea . If it was illegal or suspect we would sink it. We can't do that now. If anyone landed they could be shot or imprisoned . We can't do that either .
Being out of the EU would be some help in controlling those who arrive by a legal means but once here legally or illegally we cant get rid of them because of their human rights much of which is set out in the UN charter. We could enforce deportation where it is allowed but our governments fail to do so .

We were not self sufficient in food then and we are even less self suffient now.
We import and export billions of tonnes of goods
Heathrow alone processes 3-4 million people a month
Pulling out of the EU would not stop our need for such figures it would just make handling it impossibly difficult.
You keep trying to turn back the clock and it still doesn't work
