Given the recent gaff by Andy Gray and co regarding femail lineswomen. Would any of the ladies on here care to explain the offside law?

errrr, that's kinda what I was saying, Andy :)

I agree it's offensive to imply that one sex is superior to the other in any way and plain ridicules to imply that any concept is inherently more understandable to a person based purely on their sex.
I think it was just a bit of harmless banter.

If a female official is not tough enough to laugh that off, then she's going to have a difficult time, and should maybe take up another hobby.

Besides ... didn't she make one decision which everyone questioned, and the replay showed she was right?

Her actions spoke louder than the commentators' words !!

The facy is, she is going to get this all the time.

But, significantly ... did SHE herself complain??

I don't think so.

It's the usual bunch of "morally uncertain" people, trying to be seen to make a stance on her behalf, for fear of being labelled unfavourably if they don't.
... the "fact" is ...
Offside is when the visiting team get a last minute winning goal at old trafford .After twenty minutes of injury time has been played as its a draw at 90 minutes.
JJ...exactly.
Well like it or not, Women in comparison to men, are rubbish at football.
Fact.
All men, Mick ?
Do we do the offside trap tomorrow then.
Haha Mick...you haven't seen my OH try and play.
Lets be honest we all enjoy what’s happening to Gray and Keys, but they never said anything any one would have taken exception to in the pub, not in a sexist way particularly. It was nothing but banter, in a private conversation. However, the lady wouldn't be there if she couldn't do the job, but was it a professional opinion that would colour their judgment or just a laugh. Thing is now if the lady makes an error, and she will, because all officials do sooner or later, she is going to be under more pressure because of these two. Not saying she would have complained but it didn’t come out until over a day after the game, so she never had the opportunity.
jack, I have played in charity games against lady internationals. they are not as good as me.

If they were any good (in comparison to men) they should be able to make me look rubbish.
I am sure men internationals could, Well Billy Bremner did and he was way past his best when i played against him.

I'm off for a game of squash, I will look forward to the replies ;0)
I can't find the 'snort of derision' key on my laptop................
Mick come back you forgot your stirring stick.
Bottom line ... the people who sacked Andy Gray and the other guy have done this girl a massive disservice.

When the nasty men were rude about her ... what happened.

Did she stick one metaphorical finger up at them, and prove she was good?

No ... !

The brave white knights who run the TV Channel came to her rescue.

They saved the fair maiden from the nasty rude men.

"She is a poor, helpless female, who cannot stand up to the big, tough commentators."

They have made her look like a female who need to be looked after by men ... they have, unwittingly, given support to the jibe made by Andy Gray.

If it was me running that line, I'd have thought ... "Up yours, Andy Gray - you do your job, and I'll do mine."

But please ... don't come to my rescue on your stupid white horses.
JJ I think your missing the point, in the past ungarded comments by commentators have resulted in sckings by Sky, Ron Atkinson??

They are not attempting to protect an assistsnt ref, they are defending their professional integrity as a broadcaster, if they had said what Ron had said, would you have said they were doing it because black people couldn't defend themselves?

No of course you wouldn't. Positive sexism is still sexism no matter where you live
Okay, maybe. So have a female official on the next programme, with Andy Gray, and let them test each other.

It would make a good debate. I'm not convinced that Andy Gray is an intellectual colossus.
I've been a season ticket holder at my local club..who shall remain nameless...for over 30 years and I don't understand the offside rule,it's more complicated than ever now!
As for Karren Brady moaning about Woman being degraded, she should have a word with the people that pay her wages...Mr David Sullivan and the Gold Brothers,Ralph and David.
Chuck - I have re-read your post - apologies, I am only re-stating what you said.

I think Davethedog has put his finger on the crux of the issue - this lady has been singled out through no fault of her own, to be placed under even more scrutiny than she would endure as a woman in a male-dominated sports arena.

I also agre with Dave's point about Sky Sport's position in this. They have to be seen to be upholding professional standards as a national broadcaster.

That said, I don't think this bears comparison with Ron Atkinson's vile racial slur which rightly resulted in is instant dismissal.

I think the pair should be suspended folr a month, made to apologise on-air, and then let the matter drop. There is a serious danger of the media chasing its quarry over a cliff here - wew don;t need the self-rigteous pendulum to swing so far the other way it won't ever come back to the middle.
The other danger is that some officials will be seen to be "beyond criticism" ...

Not because of their ability, but because of some extraneous factor ... like because they are female, or black.

We are heading down a dangerous slope if we become nervous of criticising those who officiate over us.

I've heard plenty of times on Talk Sport where they've said that various referees couldn't control the game because they were unfit !!!

How dare they discriminate against people who are a bit fat? Sack them, Sack them !!!
JJ I have long taken issue with Sky over the way they undermine officials, you will be aware, as will anyone who actualy go's to football that reffs and assistants only have a split seconfd to make decision, right or wrong. The fact that Sky spend minutes on a wrong call looking at various angles before deciding that its wrong, is in my mind undermining the the refs and the fabric of the game. Nobody should be beyond criticism, but the fact that decisions made against certain teams seem to become a witch hunt shouldn't be.

Case in point WBA should of had a stone cold penalty on Sunday, its hardly warrented a mention in the press, despite the fact the ref is serialy(?) inept.
Imagine the red tops if that had been Man U.

Andy point taken, I couldn't think of a less emotive example.

MightyWBA - I'm gussing you have an ST at the Villa
