For smokers, non-smokers or shopkeeper, I can't see how this useless piece of legislation can benifit anyone. Is this just another example of barking mad big brother propaganda?

I would like to point out, not sure how relevant this is, but i for one am peeved about it.

If everyone, government included want's us to quit smoking so much, why is all the no smoking peraphenalia so sodding expensive? It's actually costing me more, to stop smoking at the moment than it was to buy fags!
well after your discourses on school life and your 'education' on the Daily Mail thread, Jayne, I am not surprised that you need a smoke......
why not do it through raising taxes and cutting the amount one can import into the UK.
LOL DTC

I don't really fancy a smoke.

Never have. Never will.

Not even at school ... in fact, esp not there ...

... I'd have been too scared of being expelled from the house.
If the Government believes it is so bad and it's costing the NHS so much money why dont they just make it illegal like certain drugs?

Canabis and amphetamines are not available for public viewing or wrapped in a colourful package but still remain a popular choice for many.
but in the long run b00 you wont be buying that stuff forever,

I think this is a good move for future generations, I grew up seeing smoking glamourised on tv, motor racing and other sports were covered in cigarette sponsors, the young generation have the chance to grow up without this habit being marketed to them so they can become addicted and spend their lives paying for this addiction
"why dont they just make it illegal" ?

Because we don't (yet) live under an authoritarian dictatorship ?
Are there facts and figures anywhere that prove since they stopped advertsing cigarettes on TV and in mags and glamourising them that it has actually cut down underage smoking?
still dont understand why you think its a big deal myriad?

they are removing them from view (no cost)
the manufacturer with produce them without any form of advertising on the pack (saving in design costs)

you are still getting your fix...
will not with
OK JJ so therefore all drugs should be legal ?
Thanks mazie

(bugger- lol)
would it be a good idea to add an amount of money to the price of a packet of cigs to specifically go to the NHS so that in effect smokers would be buying their own insurance for using the poisonous substance ( £5 on a pack of 20 springs to mind ) & yes I'm an ex smoker.Ron.
They already do that Ron.

I just don't like the cloak and dagger approach. On the one hand they do very nicely with thier 10 billion a year in revenue against the 3 billion in health care costs, and more importanly aren't we all fed up with government telling us all what's good for us as if we need educating.
mazie sometimes estimates can be way out
>>The estimate of NUKDP consumption includes cigarettes which are smuggled, counterfeit, crossborder shopped and duty-free.<<
you mean them preaching to us about cost cutting whilst they're funding their second houses and installing duck ponds with our taxes Myriad?

As if they'd do that ;-)
makes far more sense to do it through significant tax increases......and limit the ability to import to reduce 'smuggling'

If you make tobacco illegal, then you have to ban alcohol as I would guess the cost of that as to the NHS, re alcoholism and binge drinking, is far more than for Raleigh's weed.
