For smokers, non-smokers or shopkeeper, I can't see how this useless piece of legislation can benifit anyone. Is this just another example of barking mad big brother propaganda?

I read that the packaging is to change....no logos,pictures,etc-all that will remain will be the government warnings. It is hoped that this will make smoking less appealing.....how,I wonder.
There is a thread about it somewhere else on the site.
I can't see a problem trying to avoid kids taking up this practice. You can still buy smoking related items if you wish. I don't understand the fuss being made against it.
hmm, how will you know you are getting b&h instaed of royals if there is no logos?
By the name on the pack?
I don't believe that plain packaging or hiding it under the counter will prevent anyone from taking up smoking if they wish. In fact having things hidden away would be more likely to make it seem more intriguing to young people, and plain packaging would make it easier to produce counterfeit products.
The fact that the tobacco industry spends millions of pounds a year advertising its products, and on ensuring that pack designs are the most attractive for the consumer, it is patently obvious that such tactics are successful in attracting purchasters to their own brand.

Look at Paracetamol. No-one advertises it, they occasionally alter what is a very basic pacxkaging concept - because it is a ubiquitous product which does not require advertsing and packaging to sell it to consumers.

Therefore there is a considerable argument for removing cigarattes from display as a means to deter people from smoking - it is a potentially life-saving concept,
a good idea, the glitzy logo's and design almost make smoking seem acceptable, the same as having them proudly displayed behind the counter. anything that takes the advertising edge away from smoking is all good.

out of sight, out of mind.
How much of our hard earned tax money is being wasted on this ludicrous legislation?
not to mention they are reducing the amount of cigarettes in 20's to 19 for the same price.

If this were true cazzz1975 then the next move will be tobuy all alcohol in un plain labeled bottles and order a big mac from behind the couter.
they are more likely to heavily increase the tax on junk food and alcohol
there are bigger priorities to tackle - for example putting some funds into councils.

My council, Cornwall, are now cutting back on the recycling skips in supermarkets, trying to get the chains to fund them. Sainsbury's have refused and, in a fit of pique, the Council have withdrawn all facilities other than charities. We have an enormous issue with waste and fly-tipping in our lanes (and this is just not Cornwall - but given it is a county dependent on tourism......), never mind the condition of the roads.

Now, this mroning there was a report that they are reviewing their 250+ public toilets and thining of closing most of those.

Mucking around with the brand and presentation of smoking materials, without making the sale illegal, is small beer and irrelevant.
One current drawback for smokers is the conspicuous packaging, which can be seen from way off, and labels them as a "filthy smoker".

Nice, plain, anonymous packaging will be much easier to carry around, without everyone frowning at you.

Plain packaging will be a big boost for smokers.
indeed jayne, I have no clue why they are complaining :)
This is all over the country DT. A few people on here seem to think it's just the "5-a-day consultants" and "lesbian community officers" that are going. They really have no clue until it hits them personally.

Mmmmmmm fags, i still miss you, my lovely lovely little friends :-(
DTcrossword fan - have you seen the costs to the NHS of treating smoke-related diseases?

This may be many things, but 'small beer' it is certainly not!
I fancy a smoke.
Andy - those who smoke will continue to smoke....irrelevant argument.
