Keeping the English countryside white
Brian True-May the producer of long-running TV hit Midsomer Murders has been suspended after claiming part of the show's appeal was an absence of ethnic minorities
Could this be true? Are there people who will only watch a show if they can be guaranteed an 'all white' cast?
I can't believe that's true. I mean, Downton Abbey wouldn't exactly be realistic with a Muslim housemaid, but I've seen episodes of Poirot and Marple with black characters without feeling the need to switch channels.
Leaving aside this chap's right to air his views (and I disagree with his suspension), SHOULD there be programmes that exclude actors from ethnic minorities?
Should the ban be extended to other minorities (the disabled, gays etc)?

This is another example of someone opening their mouth without engaging the ' suitability' filter first - much as teenagers and old people do on a regular basis.
This silly man has pointed out the obvious, when it simply did not need to be stated, and got himself into trouble and quite rightly so.
It is quite true that for the remit of this (fictional!)...

I think you're mistaken regarding the free bus passes.
I've just entered 'free bus pass ethnic minorities' into a Google search, and got nothing back.
I then entered 'encouraging ethnic minorities into countryside' and got the BBC link back that I wrote about earlier. Could that be the story you're thinking of?

"Not quite sure of what you mean Andy."
Happy to explain then.
"First it is Teenagers that you accuse and then you go on and by also including 'old people' (who you unnecessarily insult by putting the blame on their senility)."
I didn't 'accuse' anyone, I used a general scenario to illustrate my point, and the key word here is 'general' - not all teenagers use inappropriate language in front of adults, not all old people blurt out inapproproate phrases, either for reasons of senility, or otherwise, i was simply making a general statement to line up my actual point, which is that this man has spoken without thinking first.
"Then to underline these generalisations by saying "Of course it includes all ages"
If it includes all ages why bother to pick out just teenagers and old people in the first place?"
Because I was generalising light-heartedly - as I said, you can analyse things too much!!!

"Some of these ethnic minorities have come from much larger rural area than we could possibly find them in this country. But even in their own countries you don't see them toddling off on a bank holiday with their picnic hamper in tow."
My turn to fail to understand AOG - is a picnic required for a 'toddle into the country'?

/// Did it matter a hoot if they were on a free trip? ///
Ah, the good old British tolerance shines through.
I wonder what would your feelings have been if when you were queuing to pay your fare, the ticket man said to the person in front of you "this trip is free for you" but you my friend will have to pay?

aog - that's a provocative scenario you suggest there!
I'm filing it alongside the other useful outpourings of active immaginations -
what would you say if all white women were ordered to marry a Muslim man?
what would you say if you could only claim any benefits from the state if you were an illegal immigrant?
what would you say if you had to give up your seat at the front of the bus to any person of colour who got on the bus after you?
I could go on, but honestly, what's the point?

Which happens to me all the time when I travel with my parents, who both have free bus passes, or indeed any other over 65's but I don't complain!

I would say this was accusing, and in no way generalising, the above was a definite statement.
They were your exact words, and yet you said in your defence,

I was wondering how long it would be before someone came up with that one.
Yes it is indeed true that senior citizens get free bus fares, while others have to pay.
But the difference is that senior citizens come in all colours and creeds, but the free rides are for all of them, not just a selected group of them.

Rob Berkeley, director of the Runnymede Trust, said “It is not a major surprise that ethnic minority people choose not to watch a show that excludes them"
I wonder if the same could have be said on behalf of the indigenous people, when 'Meet the Grewals'.was shown?
'Level playing field and all that'.

So why do some people think it is an issue that ethnic minorities don't visit the countryside? So what? Perhaps they dont want to. Perhaps they are not interested. They have the same opportunity as the rest of us to visit wherever they like, they dont need special treatment. They will go if they want to, if not then get over it!

Here is the Daily Express link on this story, the reason I have posted it is for the interesting "Have Your Say" readers comments, which just about sums up this ridiculous piece of political correctness.

'Meet the Grewals'?
Are you trying to compare a factual programme about an Asian family with a fictional programme about a countryside detective?
Also - did the producers of the programme state that they would not have any white family depicted on the documentary stream, despite the fact that the first family featured was white?

Just checked out the link from the Express.
What is this about introducing a 'multicultural' aspect to the show.
This is not what this chap is against....he doesn't want ANY ethnic minorities on the show. He wants it to be purely white!
He doesn't want a single non-white face on the show. We're not talking about setting up an unrealistic Asian or black community in the area - but to keep the show ethnically segregated...doesn't that seem - weird.
No blacks ever!
Do you really support that?
