I ask this because my in-laws house is (according to them) haunted by a small girl. LOL, I put this down to their love of whisky.

Stayed there several times and been up and down the stair all hours of night to use the toilet etc. TBH I didnt know about the ghost story until last week. Its a closely guarded story not repeated in front of the kids etc.

My wife said when she visited last year she took a friends daughter (as company for our daughter - both aged 14) As soon as they got there, the friends daughter went upstairs to drop her suitcase off in the bedroom, came downstairs and said 'who's the little girl in the bedroom?'

Theres no way she wouldve known the story, I'm convinced its never been spoken about to the point of being overheard. Like I said I had no knowledge of it until last week. My 2 daughters have stayed there alot and not seen anything. Only my MIL and this girl have seen anything.

I see thead people..
The belief is, as I understand it, that some have the ability whilst others either do not, or at least not enough to notice anything.

Maybe you are just not sensitive enough. Or maybe the rest of your family are delusional ;-)
i think that some people are closed off to such sights and also many adults would dismiss something as being a trick of eyes / light etc if they say anything that wasnt clear, whereas a child can see more in a shape. Whether this is to do with a sixth sense or more to do with our brains need to turn shapes and patterns into something familiar Im not sure.

But it is very common with "haunted" properties that only a few people may see things or hear things.

My sister in laws home has a ghost that just 2 of the family (and a neighbour) have seen. Ive been there many times and would love to see it but have been unlucky so far.

people seem to think a property could be haunted if someone died there. I sure a large percentage of deaths do happen in the home.
Yes, the intelligent are not susceptible!

Im sure many people believe they have seen something but I cannot believe they have. The mind plays some funny tricks on us.

Even if I saw a ghost I would put it down to my mind playing tricks.
and if the person next to you saw it too, Ratter?
My niece has this ability yet she is the most normal person you could meet. She doesn't broadcast it, and I only found out after a casual remark. I sometimes wish I was able to see people, but would probably be frightened silly! I wouldn't have believed it possible without hearing of my niece's experiences.

I've never seen anything untoward but simply dismissing reliable evidence shows a lack of rationale?
“... There's no way she would've known the story, I'm convinced its never been spoken about to the point of being overheard...”

How do you know that the story hasn't been overheard?
“...i think that some people are closed off to such sights and also many adults would dismiss something as being a trick of eyes / light etc if they say anything that wasnt clear, whereas a child can see more in a shape. They are a trick of the light/eyes/perception. There is no sixth sense. I could go one, but it's late and I can't be bothered. Suffice to say, have a look at this article about Pareidolia....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia
It is common as "I saw and I believed" and others would say "It is brain, light, eyesight playing tricks", until they see something and then they would be in the first category and the others would not believe them. Human nature it is. Few people would have so many things in their lives that would have no so called “rational” explanation but they would never talk about that. Because they believe they are “so intelligent” to let people know that they could not understand something. Again human nature.
redcrx, "and if the person next to you saw it too, Ratter? "

as long as we both agree that we saw the same thing and not under any type of duress, I would have to admit that we saw something.

Im not really expecting that to happen soon!

To me it really is a ridiculous notion! still amongst the ghosts with sheets over their heads! I don't see that changing to be honest.

If these so called ghosts served some sort of purpose, apart from cold chill, a strange noise, crocker rattling, a table lifting, a figure stood in the corner.

Best left in the story books and scary films!!
Perhaps you need one of these? <smile>

more a case of some people wanting to believe that they are special and not the very average human beings that they are
Daisya, now that would be absolute proof!!!! I must order one! :-) love it!!
Wow..I didn't know ghosts were magnetic, how was that discovered?
As the seer and the seen were both little girls, maybe she glimpsed a reflection of herself in a mirror or on a reflective surface?
jomifl, just order one, im sure there will be a money back guarantee if it doesn't work!!
//As the seer and the seen were both little girls, maybe she glimpsed a reflection of herself in a mirror or on a reflective surface?//

Yikes! Seeing a ghost of myself . . . not sure which of us would be most terrified!
@ Booldawg, I have been giving this further thought and you don't say what your response was to the child when she said 'who's the little girl in the bedroom?' did you say, ' what do you mean?' for example. If there had been a framed photograph in the bedroom, which would not be uncommon, it is a very natural question that a child might ask.
