And shouldn't there be a question mark at the end of your question?
Yes, you're right, there should be quote marks for "The defendant" and "is an idiot" but these were deliberately omitted otherwise they would have indicated where breaks in the sentence should be, thus spoiling the example of bad grammar I was trying to show.
