Is it appropriate to say to a 3 year old girl (by her mother) - "don't you look sexy" when she is trying on new clothes.

Personally, I find it distasteful, but just wanted to know if I was being over sensitive and out of touch.

Nope totally agree with you- no child should be made to look sexy, or even know what it means!

I also really despise seeing children in adult orientated clothes, crop tops and hipsters etc . And don't even get me started on the T Shirts with slogans on, I saw a toddler with a Playboy Bunny plastered across her chest the other day- I mean what???

So that makes at least two of us vic.
Eww, its creepy, I am expecting a girl and i really dislike some of the clothes available for girls at the moment.
Why do people want their girls to become mini adults, why cant we let kids be kids anymore?
I agree with you, that is gross. Sexualising anyone any age below puberty is just disgusting.

To be honest, she doesn't dress her in a sexy way - it is just a term she uses - in the same way I would use the word 'beautiful'.

I've notice her use it when she puts on any of her clothes,, including fairy costumes etc.

I would never ever call a 3 year old sexy! Its wrong!

sorry for getting wrong end of the stick then vic (oooo that rhymed!)

Yes I agree with you, it somehow doesn't feel right calling a 3 year old sexy, I presume this is your wife/GF/partner? Have you tried to persuade her to use a more suitable word?

Step daughter - and she is 25 today. There is no way she can ever be criticised as she is simply perfect (if you know what I mean).

My wife agrees that it is inappropriate. It is always easy to criticise but really we just wanted to know if we were in the minority.
No your right thats not right
Totally understand then vic- kids eh? No tellin' them owt!

I guess then all you can do is bite your tongue whenever she says it, and in the grand scheme of things it's not really that big a deal is it?

Just be smug in self knowledge that yes the majority of us agree with you that yep it's somehow 'icky' to hear that said about a 3 year old.

We are going to see them next weekend, and we get so frustrated - knowing that you can't say a thing (don't get me started about her food).

Nice to see that I'm not as out of touch as I thought I might be!
The Word Sexy can also mean Glamorous, I heard someone say " Do you like my sexy new car " . In that context it has nothing to do with sex
I think all innocence is being lost....sex sells as the advertisers say, whether a child wants to look like a model, pop star or whatever. my 13 (going on 30) step daughter is a stunning girl, but dont she know it!!! she wears so much make up every day even to school. she tells me its what all the girls do. they talk about things that make me shudder and i'm no prude! although half the time they don't know what their talking about.

To get back to what girls wear, Verbodet and La Redoute are mail order and the clothes are so pretty, not at all sexy. but make little girls look like pretty little girls...am i showing my age...
It's not a word personally that I'd ever use but it's a VERY common word in that sort of context in some parts of the country. Go to Swansea for example and you'll hear people say that every thing is "SEXXXEEEEE" from dogs and cats to cars and clothes. I don't think it has the same connotations as the real meaning of the word, but it's not something I'd ever say about a 3 year old personally as I think it's distasteful.
