Old maybe, but it's a beautiful variation on a theme - the sting in the tail just as you've been led up the garden path. The original(?) variant I heard was about the golfer, faced with a difficult approach shot in a needle match, who gets set up over the ball when a funeral cortege turns into the road which runs through the course. He immediately straightens up and removes his cap and stands motionless until the cars have moved out of sight. His playing companions all make shift to follow suit. As the golfer resumes his preparations one of the fourseome remarks that he'd been impressed by the man's show of respect. "Oh no, let's be fair", says the man, just before his shot, "it's the least I could do"..........adding after the follow through, "she was a good wife to me!"
