I cringe every time anyone says "None of us is getting any younger"
Another I fail to understand is a building "raised to the ground".
Feel better now I've got that off my chest!

No, I know that, what I meant was, I did the word and, then a gap, then the comma.

My brain's hurting now, can we please stop? LOL Poor Kate is wishing she hasn't posted this question now!
Before the grammar gestapo corrects me "a shortened version......." ^^
At the end of the day..... (which day would that be...?)
I'm a comma anarchist. I just put one in where it feels right or where a pause should be. Apostrophes in the wrong place(comma!) now that's a different kettle of fish.
What about the tree that is chopped down then chopped up!!
And is ''a tired old cliché'' a tired old cliché?
at this moment in time, grrr

you should expect that at your age, more grrr
Do you not like my avatar then ....... ?
Sorry, I mean my username !!!

It's none of us IS getting any younger, as in not one of us is getting any younger...
thanks ab editor.Do you think this fits the bill as an eggcorn, spotted today in the times club monthly-autoschediaze-supposedly meaning to act presumptively or on the spot.can find this spelling nowhere but thought it a clever way to fill the spaces left.
I hate 'almost unique in ...'

Nothing is 'almost' unique - it either is unique or it is not unique, there are no degrees!!!
I hate it when people have supposedly "turned around and said.." I like to picture them doing a 360 on the spot.. a bit Michael Jackson-esque.. before saying whatever they were going to say.
None of us Is getting any younger. But all of us are getting older.

To clarify my position in this matter, I add that, I am old: but still far from being wise. So I dislike the expression "You get wiser as you get older".:-)

Ron.
I stand by Chambers which defines 'none' as either singular or plural, making 'none of us are...' a quite acceptable alternative.
The point being..........
plautus.....I don't mind you standing by Chambers. Although I prefer to stick with Collins.

The Collins link needs one to type in the word 'None' to reveal:-

NONE.
1. not any, none of the men was represented by a lawyer, none of it meant anything to him,
2. no-one, nobody, none could deny it,
3. ◇ none the in no degree, her parents were none the wiser, None is a singular pronoun and should be used with a singular form of a verb: none of the students has (not have) a car. Old English nān, literally: not one

Ron.
plautus, like many people you misunderstand the function of a dictionary. It is not there to legislate on how words should be used, but to record how they are used, rightly or wrongly.

As others have said, 'none' is short for 'not one' and therefore takes 'is'. That some people use 'are' does not make it right, but a dictionary has to record the fact.
