The toss, in this context, means "a petty point".  Say you and I both look at a colour and I say it's "blue-green" and you say it's "green-blue", then if we argued about it we could never agree and other people would say we were arguing the toss. 

That's how I've always understood it anyway.

I always understood this as argue unnecessarily about something that is unambiguous. The "toss" - I think - refers to the toss of a coin, which results in either heads or tails. End of argument. Unless you want to argue the toss...

That makes more sense than my example.  Either way it refers to an unecessary arguement.  Bartholomew - go with Xollob's answer, not mine! *blushes*

the toss refers to the tossing of a coin before a competition/game etc.  people who argued over the result of tthe outcome - believing they had been cheated - 'argued the toss'.

the no time aspect refers to the competition needing to start on time.,
