I had an interesting period of time today with a student who could/would not see the superfluousness of 'met up with' over 'met'.

Just out of interest, do you see a difference between the two?
I was trying to point out that 'met' is perfectly acceptable. and 'met up with' is two words too many.

How rude, rojash. Who are you to judge?
Please answer my question as I'm intrigued as to why you are advocating brevity and failing to practise what you preach.
Never mind, could been worse. At least MR hasn't got his twopennorth in yet!
Plautus, why should I quit???
As I was going to St Ives I met a man with seven wives
Every wife had seven sacks
Every sack had seven cats
Every cat had seven kits
Kits, cats, sacks, wives.
How many were going to St Ives?

You woudn't have met up with him on purpose, far too complicated fella!
Not you, the OP!

In answer to your question, zacsmaster. I think that the question I asked was perfectly acceptable. My lesson was not about brevity but about clarity.
Question Author
plautus, my name is Tilly. Not OP!
Tilly your post ends with 'two words too many.' If that isn't advocating brevity, what is it?
I like this. Media URL: http://www.allmusicals.com/lyrics/myfairlady/whycanttheenglish.htm
Description:
Pickering:
I beg your pardon!

Higgins: An Englishman's way of speaking absolutely classifies him.
The moment he talks he makes some other Englishman despise him.
One common language I'm afraid we'll never get,
Oh, why can't the English learn to

set a good example to people whose
English is painful to your ears?
The Scots and the Irish leave you close to tears.
There even are places where English completely disappears.

In America, they haven't used it for years!

Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?
Norwegians learn Norwegian,
the Greeks are taught their Greek.
In France every Frenchman knows his language from "A" to "Zed"

The French never care what they do, actually, as long as they pronounce it properly.

Arabians learn Arabian with the speed of summer lightning,
The Hebrews learn it backwards,
which is absolutely frightening.
But use proper English and you're regarded as a freak.

Why can't the English,
Why can't the English,
Learn To Speak?

[Thanks to Milton Fu, Missy for lyrics]

That was my post, not my lesson, zacs-master.
Tilly, "blue sky thinking", "actioning" the language etc? Please explain. It sounds very "airy fairy."
Ohhhh I see. So you don't practise what you preach then. Fair enough.
Question Author
Do as I say, not do as I do, zacs-master. This is not a classroom.
Doesn't do much for the validity of your argument.
You are losing badly, Tilly, time to retire graciously.
Ellie May -Blue sky thinking is 'airy fairy' thinking. To meet up with others implies to me that you met your friend as arranged and then met the others later. 'Up with' is superfluous. I take it that some of you have degrees in English to be able to question someone else's use of it.
Not seen F______G soul all day.
