Called the AA out in this morning's downpour as the wipers had packed up. Explained to the AA man that I suspected the linkage had broken because (and I demonstrated it as I said it) the wipers were now as slack as old Harry and I could move them whichever way I wanted. Who was 'old Harry' and why was he slack? Just a saying I picked up from my parents from Essex and the East End of London.

I think "Old Harry" is likely to be the devil, to whom all bad things are attributed.
