Doctor's Test Question

Which number did doctors use to ask the patient to say as a test? I'm fascinated by the same query posted under "Quizzes" & know what is meant, but am probably too old to remember! Does anyone else know? And btw what question does the doctor ask nowadays then in the same situation?!
