“...they must have their reasons” sounds just the sort of wide-eyed optimism displayed by Pangloss in Candide. Everything is for the best in this the best of all possible worlds (or similar). It struck me that your apparent worldview (“they must have their reasons) was pure Panglossian logic.
It’s the sort of belief in the essential goodness of everything that says ‘they might be going to burn us but at least they’ll hang us a bit first’ - not a quote, but it could be.
