Translation Please

"Love is a friendship set on fire." It would be great if someone could translate that to Latin for me!

I'm loath to disagree with QM as he's always spot-on but I'm not sure that's the best translation. 'Ardens' is fiery so QM's phrase is better translated as "love is fiery (ardent) friendship". I think "Love is friendship set on fire" needs to be passive so
my stab at it is "Amor amicitia ardentus est" however, it is 32 years since I took my Latin O level so I might be a bit rusty.

It's a sight longer since I took mine, Maxi! The Oxford Latin Dictionary translates 'ardens' as 'ablaze', which seems close enough to 'set on fire' to me. "Love is friendship ablaze" seems OK, but I really shouldn't disagree with someone whose experience in the language is so much more recent than mine! (That's a joke, by the way.) Cheers

i agree with ardens meaning burning...does anyone know what set on fire is in Latin ?

I have bearly any understanding of Latin, but I am pretty sure that est is necessary.

The 'est' is optional, but - if used - it generally comes at the end rather than at the point at which it would appear in English.

'Accendere' is the Latin for 'to set on fire' or 'to kindle'. It's obsolete in English now, but 'accend' was used to mean exactly that at one time.

I needed it for an English project. We had to do a project for Mardi Gras and our group did it on Venus the goddess of "LOVE". So part of the float was you needed to come up with a motto, so we thought of one having to do with love. Mottos are usually in Latin also.
