A word with several meanings. My current favorite is 'devices' ; a contrivance, a plan or scheme, a system part, a motto, a conceit, a masque. I also like the word masque, though not multi, and chiral Q.V.

Don't think I have a fave, (never thought of it before), but how about "set" which has more than 30 meanings, (see how many you can get).
Does slang count? If so, then my current favourite is "Munt" and all of it's extentions. e.g. - "I went out and got totally munted last night" (i went out and got drunk) - "It's munting it down out there!" (it's raining very hard outside) - "He's munting it." (that motorist is travelling too fast) - I'm sure you get the idea. I'll shut up now.
"Cleave" is interesting, as its two meanings are almost directly opposite - to split apart; or to cling together.
No.
It must be the biggest multiword out there ... how often do you hear people say "What part of 'no' don't you understand?" My personal favourite is 'love.' Says so much - such a little word. Haven't heard 'munt' before but I like it! Cactus, you da Muntster!!!
A list of 'Janus words' - such as Geofbob's 'cleave' - which can be effectively their own opposite will be found by clicking http://graphics.lcs.mit.edu/~seth/misc/selfantonym

where are you Cactus, saying munt?
Thanks tief! I've finally reached the level of Muntster i've been striving for all these years! And xyzzyplugh, i'm in the Westcountry. (i bet you're saying now -"Ahh, that explains a lot!") ;)
no sure where you're from Cactus, but round my way (!) a Munter should be steered well clear of being a derogatory word for an unattractive person, particularily female.
'Munt' started life as 'umuntu', a native South African word for - believe it or not - a native South African! It was used by whites as a derogatory term for their servants or the black person in general. In other words, it was a racial slur. It seems, from what has been written here already, to have become less offensive, though still apparently a slur in some uses. All the same, I'd advise you all not to use it too freely in Cape Town!
