I've never really understood what the weather forecasters actually mean by 'squally' showers! Does it mean drizzle or rain, on and off?

From the early 1700s, it then took on the meaning of a violent gust or sudden wind-storm, on the basis that wind often makes the same sort of howling noise. 'Squally rain', therefore, means sudden, heavy rain accompanied by strong gusts of wind.
