Because alight means to dismount, finish ones journey, to fall, to descend.
Such signs are, of course, on the platform side of the train...the obvious suggestion being that you'd be a bit daft to alight on the other side.

It's rather like the guard's announcement that goes: "Southampton is the next station stop." Obviously, he doesn't know whether the train might have to stop before it reaches the platform and consequently is covering the company if a passenger decides to get out before the station!

Because if the said "Get Off Here" it may be taken the wrong way
'Alight Here' is actually a clever way of confusing the tourists!
